i didn't think the cigar lighter was live with the ignition off so charging that way doesn't work? certainly isn't on my 4S.

halfords now do a very neat charger conditioner which is all buiilt into the mains plug and comes with some wiring, connectors etc that you can fix permanently to battery terminals and a quick fit connector you can't get wrong and which enables charger to be plugged unplugged quickly to the wiring which can be left permanently connected. wire is thin enough t to allow bonnet lid to be closed completely. All fused etc and works really well - I've got about 3 of them. about 35 quid I think, recommended

I recently bought a CTEK XS3600 for my 993. It has a lead supplied with it that connects to the battery. You just plug the CTEK into the lead when you need to use it. The cable exits the bonnet through at the side and doesnt get crushed.

I have a Porsche charger that connects direct to Cigarette lighter and have used for 7 years with no problems. My car is a US car and I bought the charger aas a standard accessory at a US Porsche dealer. I think European cars may need a small wiring change to be able to accommodate a similar charger, but it is much better than connecting to the battery so could be worth finding out from Porsche or a specialist what changes are needed.
