Battery Vent Breather Pipe

On fitting a new battery (Bosch S4 007) I have noticed there is no breather pipe in the boot to connect to the vent hole on the battery.
There is also a vent hole on the old battery but nothing appears to have ever come out of it.
Not having fitted a battery for a very long time I didn't know there was a vent pipe on them.
It was only when I saw the small plastic bung attached to the terminal protection piece that I thought "What's that for?" [8|] and investigated further.
Should there be a breather pipe and if so where does it go?

it goes from the battery to a small hole (with rubber bung) just behind the battery - earlier cars had a small vessel that connected instead. In certain circumstances batteries can vent hydrogen, it is better not to fill the interior with hydrogen, though it would probably need a charging fault to create a significant amount.

Marty - I have the opposite, I have a vent but nothing on the battery to connect it to (I don't think).

If you're going on Wednesday I'll show you then.

I will have to source some parts to make one up.
Do you need to remove the battery to access the hole?

No from memory it is on a raised section near the earth lead, pipe length is maybe 15cm, I can probably grab a photo later,

Usually a couple for sale on EBay

This is from my cab which is 1991 but it is very similar to my 1990 - I think the connector to the battery is white and straighter on that from memory (excuse the waxoil making it look grubby in the background!)

I think mine (88) looks like the one Ruddy posted a pic of.

945.611.601.00 - £15.76 is the listed OPC price.

I was just thinking about this the other day, I put a new batter in and the instructions talked about venting.

I have that canister, but the end of the pipe is missing, no connector to the battery.

I wonder what happens to the nasties once they end up in the canister?

Looking at a picture of the canister it would appear that the fitting on the bottom has a hole in it which fits into a grommet in the body and vents the gas to the outside.
Porsche must have decided it didn't really do much and just put the pipe straight into the grommet on later models.
As for the plastic fitting for the battery, my friendly local Halfords gave me one for free as they said they often don't need it because the car usually already has one.
