Battery warning

Morning All!

My Dad owns a '83 924 Lux and the "battery warning" light came on, he thinks its the alternator. I started it for him yesturday (hes away now for a while) and it started fine but the warning light came on and the voltage reading is at a steady 11v. Could it be a bad ground or is it more likely the alternator is dieing?

Cheers

Before we start to wory unnecessarily check the earth braid for the alternator which is just about accessible, this can gradually split from vibration. I know, it happened to me in Southampton. If it isn't that, look for the alternator harness plug somewhere front left bulk head and check for good connection there. If not that then remove the alternator (not that difficult) then take out the voltage regulator and check the brush length, and also that the brushes move freely in the holders. There is little point in checking the engine to body earth, in the coil area as you must have quite a good connection to start the engine. Incidentally 11v with no charging isn't bad considering the fuel pump can draw up to eight amps. Finally you will find it easier to remove the belt if you crack the water-pump pully bolts, first, before anything else, and take the pulley off.

Im pretty sure he had the battery replaced not so long ago, might even have been a few months. Ill have a fiddle when i get a few minutes....
