Battery!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'm sure this one has been up loads of times.

My battery will last a week or so if I do not use the car, so I have been going for a run at least once a week to keep everything charged up and the oily bits moving over the winter.

Unfortunately I missed the last one, was away for a week over Xmas and now the battery is so flat that I could not even jump it off the Mundano (even with its high power diesel battery).

What is my best bet?

Some sort of trickle charge/conditioner to get some life back in the old girl. Which one would people recommend and where can I buy from.

Really p***ed off too as she was looking quite sexy in the winter sunshine and I was looking forward to the drive [:)]

How old is your battery? If you need a new one definitely buy a Bosch 'Silver' 70ah. You can get them from Eurocarparts or GSF for around £60.

Some Porsche owners use a battery conditioner from CTEK who supply OE equipment to Porsche. They cost around £50.

I bought a battery conditioner around 2 years ago from Aldi/Lidl for around £20. It is EXACTLY the same as the CTEK (the only difference is it doesn't have a CTEK sticker on it). Worth keeping an eye on the flyers for their next 'car week'.

The battery is usually fine, as long as I do not leave it for more than about 10 days and even then I can usually jump start it with out too much effort (apart from pushing the car up a fairly gradual incline), but it went completely flat as I left it for a good 2 weeks.

I guess a battery isolator switch would be a good idea, has anyone made this modification? Perhaps if I got a lockable one, it would double up as an anti-theft deterrant too, but the alarm would not function then [8|] It would be good for the periods when I am not driving though.

I will have a look in the local Lidl for the battery conditioner, hope it is still available. Will this take a battery from no charge to full charge as well as maintaining the charge over a period?

Colin,

If you fit a kill switch the battery will last for weeks. The immobiliser will prevent the car from being started when the battery is re-connected. You have an immobiliser right? - this is more than likely draining the battery. Buy the best CTEK conditioner you can afford - they can bring batteries back from the dead (almost!). If you have the facility to keep the conditioner plugged in during storage - all the better - you may not need a kill switch. HTH.

I'm not sure if a battery conditioner will re-charge a flat battery. I've just got a normal battery charger and that takes at least 24 hours to fully re-charge my battery. I bought a new Bosche Silver 7HN and kept the older one as a spare (stored fully charged) for times when the battery flattens. I too make sure I run my car at least once a week but have left it up to 3 weeks with no problems in starting.

For an intelligent isolator I use this one ....my car is a Tiptronic so there is no way to bump start it and I have never in 4years been left "battery stranded" as this box will isolate the car when it sees the volts get low due to draining.

ebay via the US site is pretty cheap for these as well.

When my battery started getting tired I went to a local Battery centre, got one of those sealed maintenance free gel batteries that are now quite common in leisure boats. It is a much more environmentally friendly alternative.

I paid about £70 for it two years ago and its been perfect,it would also still start the car after a fortnight of standing in the garage.I then decided to fit another cigar socket under the dashboard that is permanently live.
I now keep the C2 plugged into a Porsche trickle charger and its been faultless since ,

Yes it would fully charge a flat battery, it may take a week though! The math could be done to work it out.

i use a small solar panel. That keeps it charged. Only cost me £9.99.

I tend yo be OK. I bought a battery with a four year warranty. I seems to be lucky that it busts every two to three years and then get a free new one!

I'd recommend one of those portable jump start jobbies. I am sure they have a combined battery conditioner/ charger.

Halfords ... five year guarantee and open Weekends and Holidays ... and a 964RS isolator ... just to keep it fresh ...[:)]

I ended up getting a conditioner from Halfrauds for £37. It took a good 36hours to bring the battery back 'from the dead', but it started the car straight off afterwards.

It also has a conditioner to maintain charge.

I will look at getting an isolator fitted at some stage.

My battery died after we went to the porsche picnic and my son flicked the interior light on. I have charged the battery up and use a solar panel to keep it topped up same as Pete917.
Waiting for her service to see if there is a drain on the battery or if it's the battery itself that's faulty.
