any tips on stopping the battery going flat on a 996

car is garaged but no access to mains power
 
I use the porsche supplied (at a charge of course ...scuse the pun), I always plug in when not in use and mine has sat in the garage for a couple of weeks at a time and has always been ready to go when needed

You evidently didn't notice he says there is no power in the garage!

Apart from Solar Cells on the roof I'm not sure what to recommend...
 
Try a yacht chandlers for a solar power battery charger. Need to find a way of hiding it on the roof or its bound to get nicked.

I've seen ones that plug into the cigar lighter exactly the same as the Porsche one.

Are you just worried about it going flat, or does it actually go flat?
I have left mine at the airport for 3.5 weeks, and it started first time (well it turned over one or two more times than normal). It seems to last quite well.

Remember, for othesr reading this who are not aware, after 5 days the remote central locking sensor gets switched off, so pressing the key fob will not unlock the doors.
 
2 questions along similar lines:

1. Can I use any old trickle charger or does it have to be a Porsche version?

2. More importantly...the battery on my 2003 C2 goes flat after 3-5 days. It's not the regular 5-day power shut-down, the battery actually drains flat. The first time it happened I took it to my OPC who put it on the ramp for three hours and told me the battery was indeed draining but there was nothing wrong with the car so it must be my Tracker. Tracker came straight away and replaced the entire unit and wiring, but after one weekend of no use, the battery was flat again. Any ideas?

(Looking back, when I originally collected the car (2nd hand) from the OPC it was parked in the showroom and they were charging up the battery. They said the salesman had taken it home the night before and left the radio on. I didn't want to wait so they put in a new battery on the spot and all was well, until...)
 
How could they tell there was nothing wrong with the car? The porsche tester diagnostics said there wasn't? Not the same as actually measuring the current drain against the specs.
 
When I got my car, I had identical problems... so I changed the battery from the local battery shop (see below)
Batteries, unless they are used properly they last for 2-3 years problem free.
Tired batteries loose all their charge the moment a load is applied, and this can be tested at a battery shop.
Any trickle charger would do, but the most expensive ones not only charge, but also discharge the battery so keep it in form.
If there is no power available, disconnect the battery but first plug an Emergency Car Starter, e.g. http://www.autobarn.net/ec1300.html so you do not loose all of your settings.
By the way the alarm/immobiliser system goes to sleep after 60 hours and it responds only to a contact breaker, so you use the key to get in and when the alarm goes off you press the fob button.

One night around 01h00 in the morning I stopped for some petrol and when I went back the car it would not start.
Some very nice guys in a very old and battered Nissan were only to happy to start me up, but they could not help the green on their face and ask me "Isn't this a very expensive car". We looked like out of a cartoon... The next day I changed the battery....[:)]
 
You can activate the key fob immediately after waking up the system from sleep mode with the key - and prevent the alarm from going off at all.

They said they had measured the rate at which the battery was draining and that this figure was higher then it should be. (Is that the right answer or the wrong one?!)
 
Re Concept comments - agreed.
Open the driver's door with the key - as we used to do in times gone by, and then 'plip' the remote. Everything should then be fine as stated above.

I make sure that at least once every 4 weeks I take my current car (Boxster - 996 coming shortly), for a spin of at least 40 miles. Puts a big grin on my face, and the battery has never let me down on this basis.

[I am now touching a big piece of wood................].
 
LOL at the OPC's diagnosis! "It's higher than it should be so it must be the tracker" seems to have been their opinion! I think it would be worth getting the tracker disconnected and then measuring the current drain and compared it with what they'd expect. Or perhaps your battery is on its way out?
 
Life of the Porsche battery varies hugely.

I got 8 years from mine, others get 2.

If it's showing any signs of gailing then change it asap - or you'll find it fails completely just when you need it.[&:]

Use of a battery conditioner, and regular checking of the electrolyte levels in the cells helps to keep the battery in good condition for far longer.
 
hi you wont go far wrong with a varta battery they are a good german manufacturer and will be supplied by local battery specialists
 
When my Porsche Moll died, I fitted a Bosch Silver from Euro Car Parts (being careful to buy the larger 80Ah version).
 
Mine died on me a couple of weekends ago. A lot of research and chats with my mechanic (Mike at Zentrum in Notts) and went with the Bosch Silver. However Mike recommended sticking with the original recommended amp rather than an 80. Not techy enough to explain but made sense at the time. No warning, noises or dials. Justfine one min, dead the next. Porsche changed their battery supplier a few years ago and apparently the new ones are not as good as the old ones (an Eastern euro supplier). Varta was a second choice for me!

Think an interior light that I hadnt turned off drained it when I had been cleaning it all day. Must have been on its way prior to that. Couldnt start it to get it in the garage and just kept making the clicking noise on turn over. Trickle charge all night didnt help. Had the embarassment of 3 neighbours helping me to push it back in the garage and the RAC out the following day to boost it [:mad:][:)]

New battery works like a treat. And found the old one hadnt been fitted to the tray properly and had been wedged in with a piece of wood ....
