was thinking of buying a set of 18s for track use,but i have been told the alloy version are lighter and stronger, but i dont like the look of these, will the magnesium centres become a problem to get a hold of in the future if you crack them? and are they not suitable for road use? any one here running them

I've got a second hand set of the 17" BBS mags (thanks to a previous RS owner !) which I've been using for a few months now, both road and track. Supposedly any mag wheel should be fairly regularly x-rayed for cracks etc and they are meant to be more fragile, but frankly few of our cars are ever used extensively on road, and as much as we would like to think that we are all Lewis Hamilton in waiting, I doubt we really put them to very serious stress on track. Overall I don't think it's worth getting too concerned about, and to be honest I have no idea what the availability of teh wheel centres is like - I know that FVD currently list the 18" centres, but don't list the 17"s.
What is more of a hassle is keeping the bare ali outer rims corrosion free and looking nice. The sensible thing to do on purchase is to get them sent off straight away for anodising, which will protect the rims and make them a far more useable prospect. I'm about to attack mine with a dremel and see if I can polish them up a bit !

I have a set of the 18" mags. The mags are lighter than the aly... that's the only reason magnesium is used. The rims have stickers saying. For competition use only. Not for street use. but I can't imagine anyone takes any notice. I should be getting my rims back from anodizing later next week. I've chosen a brighter coating which offers less protection than a longer anodizing process, but longer means duller! I'll post a pic when I get them.
The centres are still available through Gert at Carnewall but who can guess about future availability. IMO the mags do look much nicer tha the aly due to the wave-like detail to the circumference of the aly centre.
Mags do deteriorate with use and age, but I've seen 30 - 40 yr old American racing mags refurbed and used on dragsters... where I imagine they see a bit of stress. You could black-light test the centres or x-ray them if you are concerned.
The rims are aluminium for both mag and aly centres. For God's sake don't try to anodize the mag centres... as I stupdly did. It destroys them!

do the outer rims tarnish quickly? i had bbs rims before with unlaquered outers and they done my head in tryin to keep them clean, i have cargrapics at the moment and they are stainless outers, very easy to clean, i wanted a second set of wheels for track with cup tyres so i thought the bbs would be the best because they are the lightest, but if i have to take them apart to anodise the outers when i buy them new i think it might be a bit to much hassle as there not that cheap to start with, how much is it to anodise the outers? are they lighter than oe mags?cheers

I hear what everyone is saying about the aluminium BBS race wheels not being quite as nice looking as the mags, but I would still chose the aluminium version over the mag due to the brittleness issue (whether imagined or not).
As soon as I get some, I will anodyse the rims. I have spent days with a Dremmel trying to polish non-anodysed rims (Speedlines) and it is soul destroying. Anodysing these rims is a no brainer.
I heard that the aluminium version is as light as the mag version, and that race teams are starting to use the aluminium version. Could be wrong.

I've had mags and aluminium; mags on the 64RS (indeed, my very wheels are referred to above by Jamie!) and aluminium on the 93RS. I prefer the look of the aluminium, but they do perhaps suit the slightly newer car.
And yes, the outer rims tarnish very quickly unless you are a serial polisher.

First of all, excuse me for my poor english (I'm french...).
When I ordered my BBS Racing wheels (to fit on my 993 RS CS) directly from BBS Motorsport, I was told from the BBS commercial:
* the aly are as light as the mag
* in Germany, the mag do never get the TÃœV homologation, that meens the germans are not allowed to drive on open road with them. The reason is the risk of crack, which seems to be very high. The racing teams which used them let them x-ray very often.
* the aly get the TÃœV homologation.
So far, I am very satisfy with the aly. But it's true that the outer rims needs to be polished very often. I didn't anodized them, because BBS couldn't tell me which type of aluminium they use. And if the aluminium is not suitable to this process, the result can be very awfull (brown instead of silver). So was a little afraid about the final result.
In the mean time, I've heard that some people in France had problems with the cracking of the outer/inner rim!!! So need some visual check time to time.

ok i think im goin to give them a miss and just put the cups on the cargrapics,i dont like the al ones and not really into polishing outers every week...anyone got any 964 rs oe mags for sale?? or chickens teeth
Mate, don't be put off by getting them anodysed. There are blokes out there who have anodysed their rims with some success. Slightly less shine, but that's OK. They don't go brown as far as I know. The aluminium BBS race wheel is the coolest wheel out there. I wouldn't get Cargraphics.

I agree with Johnny. Phil. Don'tworry about nidizing outers. I'll post a pic when I get mine back. Bright anodizing is very bright but offers less protection than satin anodizing... and they are soooooo much more exclusive than Cargraphics/ LMs etc...
