Bearing grease

I'll be fiting new wheel bearings soon and I need a new can of grease.
I've seen black lithium grease, a light brown clear grease, copper grease and my current tin which looks like margarine (Duchams Keenol I think[8|]).
What's the difference between them, and which should I be using to pack out wheel bearings?

Good Q.

I think any of them. Wheel bearings aren't terrifically high-load items, given their size, so the grease of choice is probably less critical than it could be.

I have always used Renolit (a waterproof grease) for most applications around my cars. It's good-quality stuff, and being waterproof should stick around a little longer in places which may be prone to splashes. (I know that wheel bearings are sealed, so this shouldn't apply here.) Oh, and I have quite a lot of the stuff ... long story!

Keep the marg for your toast. [:D]

Oli.

I`ve always been led to believe that lithium grease will take higher temperatures without softening and being `thrown off` reciprocating parts and also resists emulsifying (mixing and dilution by water) better. Brown grease is for general purpose sliding shafts, trunnions, ball joints etc etc and where it is generally lower temp applications.

I personally always use a lithium based molybdenum grease for CV and non sealed wheel bearings.

Copper grease is a copper base suspended within a compound. If the compound evaporates then a thin layer of copper is retained thereby protecting the surface (so good for bolt/nut applications or where mating faces meet ie: alloy wheels to metal hubs) but is a general lubricant and is not designed for bearing lubrication.

Edited to add below the info from the Castrol site (just checked in the garage having read it and its LM grease I use (I always thought the M was for Molybdenum but its not [8|])
