Hi has anybody fitted one of these in a 993?
I had one fitted last week, but the GPS aerial coudn't pick up any satellites from where it was located under the dashboard (I want the aerial invisible from inside the car)
Where have you located the GPS aerial?
I saw on a 996 thread that somebody had no trouble with the aerial under the 996 dash, is there a difference with the 993, or should it work under the dash and I was just unlucky?
The fitter is now suggesting locating the aerial under the rear parcel shelf, but I'm concerned about pulling up the carpets on my pride and joy.

Hi,
we had ours done in July by a German GPS/Car Radio specialst when visiting family back home. The guy there told us that some people try to fit the areal under the dash but that that's actually completely pointless because there's some metal strut inside that would prevent signals from getting through. So they put ours somewhere near the back seat. It was apparently a great deal of work, removing panels and lift the carpet, etc. but they've done a great job, i. e. no visible wires and stuff - and the device is working great. Very happy we had it done.

Whoever fitted yours didn't read the installation guide properly!

The front PU is plastic and so is a great place for hiding the littel black squares. My Sat Nav arial and Road Pilot ariel are located here and it sounds as though wiring to here will be much easier than lifting carpets and removing panels to place them inside the car. Not a trailing wire in sight.

The only extremely slight negative is if you look really, really hard in good sunlight, you can see slight curvature of the PU where the aeriels are. No one else has yet spotted this on the car!

Thanks for the responses.
In defence of the guy fitting the unit, he originally said that it would not work under the dash due to metal obstruction. However, before fitting, he phoned Becker and they told him there would be no issue!
The front pu sounds interesting, though I didn't really understand how you could see the aerials? Could you explain exactly where you put them?
Targawoman have you had any problems with reception through the rear screen, as there was some concern that the signal would be obstructed when you use the heated rear element?

I put the small square aeriel in the far left hand corner behind the tax disc. Have to admit that I never notice it and very hard to be seen from outside.

and I did the same as the last caller.... but then again getting the system hooked up to the speedo for accuracy is the trciky bit !

It is a very easy install if you take your feed from the rear spoiler module under the dash. Fitted it myself in about 90 minutes!

The aerials are sandwiched between the steel bumper and the plastic PU. ie they sit on the top of the steel and below the plastic. Hence you can't see the aerials, but if you look very hard in the right light you can see a slight curvature of the plastic PU where they are sandwiched in.

I had a complete revamp of the stereo / communications system after nearly 2 years of looking at many different options to ensure i) the interior was as original as possible, ii) there was nothing stuck in the middle of the dash board (apologies, I should have said Micro Road Pilot before) iii) there were no wires visible along the dash board / trailing around inside the car and iv) the sound quality was awsome!

The install was done by The Sound Gallery in High Wycombe, and I have not yet tracked back all the wires to all the bits of kit to see exactly how / where they have routed the wires (and I've no idea where they've hidden one of the crossovers.) However, under the carpet under the bonnet at the front, the majority of the wires are tagged to the wiring looms so my guess is the aerials were inserted after removing the spare wheel and tool kits to get better access.

no problems at all but then - it's a Targa, so there's no metal roof that could in any way contribute to electromagnetic interference.
