Becker Grand Prix and Ipod Remote Kit just fitted!

I just had a Becker Grand Prix 7992 and a Becker Ipod Remote fitted by John Kleis in Reading, who have done a really good job of removing an unsightly one year old Pioneer and replacing with the Becker, whilst retaining the usage of the Nokia amp and digital processor.

The 7992 has a red display, which when illuminated looks really good in the dash. It doesn't clash with my OBC as the OBC has an amber on black display and the Grand Prix has a black on red/amber/blue or green background illumination, with the illumination colour depending on the model. With the red illumination on, it goes well with the red needles, hazard warning light and red lights above the centre console switches.

The functionality of the Becker is brilliant and so much easier to use than the previous Pioneer, which was very fiddly and had almost invisible labeling for each function.

The Bluetooth works very well, as does the Ipod Remote, which is in the glovebox and enables you to keep your Ipod out of site and use the Becker for controlling the Ipod. The sound seems better than the Pioneer too, with a tighter midrange, more controlled bass and sweeter treble....or maybe it's just because it looks better!?

It is really sad that Becker have pulled out of the UK ICE market, as their head units are just brilliant. Apparently it's due to Motorola taking their Bluetooth license off them? I hear that the same is about to happen to Clarion in the UK as well.

If you can find a Becker for sale and are unhappy with the look of your current head unit in your 993, buy it, as they not only look brilliant in the 993 dash, they also work amazingly well. I got mine from Pentagon GPS. They didn't have and amber models left, but they do have red ones and to me it looks just fine. They retail them at £300.00.

Next on the list:

Bilstein B6 HDs to be fitted to M030 chassis
Minor paintwork blemishes repaired
New front foglight housings
Headlamp cleaning
Osram Night Breaker bulbs

It is not too clear what's happening about Becker and bluetooth. When I bought mine (must be 3 years ago now) it had bluetooth - then within a few months the same unit had no phone kit or bluetooth - citing licensing issues. Then a few months late it was back to full spec.

So are you saying it has gone again?

Agreed great units! I have the amber and ipod connector as I was lucky to buy them at the nice price before they went out of stock everywhere! [:)]

My German import has the original Blaupunkt Bremen RCM 43 that was fitted by the the supplying OPC (or OPZ in Germany [;)]) Fills the space nicely and makes an acceptable noise when I can't be bothered listening to the flat 6

I've heard a few stories, ranging from them pulling out of the UK only, to ending production of own brand car audio completely. This is apparently all down to Bluetooth licensing issues. They are still listing car audio products on their German site, so I guess it is only the UK that has lost out?

A trip to Germany will be in order if I ever need a new one, as for me Becker is the only way to go!

I have a rather naff Sony unit in my 993. Has anyone got a photo of this unit to see what it looks like in the dash please?

Thanks

The unit looks like this in the day time:

And the red display that I have looks like this (I could not find an amber model anywhere!)

I think the red goes really well?

Not particulary good pic of the "indianapolis" version in my car (but they all look the same).

I choose the Amber display but I typically have the brightness turned down so it does not glare during night driving.

Interesting - I had never considered the red one - but seeing Sam's pics I agree - the red display matches the red needles on the dials - cool.

Amber only matches the lights on the rear fog and demister knobs![8|]

And your car is red too! Move quickly though if you want one as not many left....and don't forget the iPod remote kit if you required.

Can anyone recommend a head unit that incorporates iPod and Bluetooth connectivity and has an iPod-like display on the head unit. I know that Alpine and Pioneer have models like these at around the £250-£300 mark but wondered if anyone had any experience good or bad?

Depends what you mean by "iPod Like" (Classic or Touch?). In Becker models (see above) use the "tuner knob" to emulate the iPod classic's spin wheel and you get the info about the music tracks displayed as you "spin" - the text is bigger (so you can read from driver's seat) but than means most music track titles don't fit in - but it's good enough to find the track you want.

I was thinking more of the Kenwood as below which is highly rated and has a colour ipod-like screen but I worry that it might look too "bling" in a 993?

Becker units are still available to buy in Germany.. I have just bought one from Amazon.de, a brand new Cascade Pro unit - bleedin expensive, but if you want a Becker before they totally disappear you have little choice.

Google translate is a cracking website and takes most of the guesswork out of the process (my CSE German wasn't up to the job!!)

He who hesitates etc....I ummed and ah'd about the red face and finally called Pentagon to be told they've sold out
I reckon you started something!

I have just installed the Kenwood KIV-700 with bluetooth module for a total cost of £360 including installation. The unit works superbly well with fast iPod scrolling (ipod in glove box) and display of album art on colour screen. The bluetooth part is made by Parrot for Kenwood so that is top class too and is fully integrated, including on-screen access to address book. Would really recommend this kit.

From the picture on the Kenwood web site I can see that it is reasonably "traditional" (ie it has one knob!) - but would it be possible for you to take a picture of it "in dash" so we can see how it suits a 993. (Not that I'm thinking of changing soon as I have one of the "rarer than 993s themselves" Beckers!)

No affiliation etc http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Becker-Grand-Prix-7990-CD-Radio-MP3-Bluetooth_W0QQitemZ300534574732QQ

A red screened one finished a couple of days ago for £187.50 which is a bargain!
