becker grand prix

Should be plug and play, it has the same harness connection as the 32 (which IIRC is the dot matrix version of the 22? It is the 32 you have and not the fibre optic CDR23?) You'll have to do some extra fitting for the microphone the GP comes with. If you have a search in the 944 sub forum one of the members put one in a 944 not that long ago.
Are you getting the amber one like this: http://www.caraudiodiscount.com/acatalog/becker_grand_prix.html ?
Do you know if it does amber text on black background? Is it a good colour match for the aircon control? Are you getting the iPod remote?
Let us know!

No, they don't, or if they do I have not yet worked out how!

But you can adjust the brightness in the set up menu, and it does need some toning down to match the car - but once done it matches well.

If it looks original and matches the rest of the car i will get one, I need to see one in the flesh, I don't want it to stand out, the main reason i'm changing is the ipod connection and the BT, I need both in my car!

Mark how do you find the unit? does the BT work well?

Thanks for the reply

Chris

I fitted one last year and it's a brilliant device. Look absolutely original in the car. Bluetooth works perfectly with my Motorola KRZR - no disconnections or anything, it just auto syncs up when you turn it on.

I had the CDR22 with optional amplifier and it was virtually plug and play, but I had to make a small change to switch the external amp on as the external power is on a different pin to the OEM box. Here's the detail if you need to do this ...

Just wanted to add that I got my 7990 today, went to install it and no sound. It seems that if you have the factory fitted amp module (not Bose) it doesn't work out of the box as the signal from the unit on the CDR22/32 that switches the amp on is no longer on the 7990. It's been replaced by a sub driver.
So, thanks to some help from another forum here is the fix:
Cut the wire going to C1-6 (yellow block), leave about an inch spare in case you need to add in a sub. Splice this free wire into the pin 5 on block A ie A5.
You can get all this info in the back of the 7990 and CDR22/32 head unit manuals. [/blockquote]

Also see my other thread on fitting it .... "Access to A-pillar" http://www.porscheclubgbforum.com/tm.asp?m=297862

Got mine from sextons ... http://www.sextonsdirect.co.uk/GP7990_becker-grand-prix-7990-cdmp3wma-tuner.html

About 260 GBP with delivery.

I have a Becker Grand Prix in my 944 Turbo. Looks the part (even the plastic used is similar to the standard dash trim), and the sound is fantastic. Runs my amp and subwoofer very well.

The iPod connection is good quality, and gets the best it can out of your little MP3 player (mine's hidden away in the armrest). Navigating your iPod through the head unit takes a bit of getting used to, but once you've practiced a bit it's great (best tip is to remember you have a +1 or +10 button for toggling how many songs/artists/whatever the main dial skips through).

The Bluetooth unit isn't the best I've ever seen, but it works and is a nice bonus. Connection to my phone is seamless, but the mic quality leaves a little to be desired. You should probably think carefully about where you mount it.

Nice extras (assuming you can bothered to wire them in properly) are the display dimming when you switch headlights on and the volume adjusting itself with your road speed.

All in all, a great head unit. Well worth the asking price.

Martyn - I seem to recall that you had to do something with the alarm wire to the mounting cage. Either disconnect and insulate, ot make sure that it is not connected to earth when the radio is in the cage?

Edit: Doh! - just read your link.......

Very pleased with it. I note Poprock's comments, but the bluetooth/mic is the best I've ever had in a car. Works perfectly every time for me (with my Nokia phone).

Only problem now is finding one! It seems Becker have been stopped retailing any HU with BT, somethink to do with Siemens and copy right! If anyone sees one for sale please let me know.

Thanks for all the advice, how did we ever cope without forums?

Cheers Chris.

I've just had a Kenwood 7200 unit as I wanted the sat nav... I don't really like it though, it's clunky and feels far to much like a computer than a stereo. It also doesn't look OE (unless you turn it off). But you live and learn.

Cheers

Hi Chris try a Becker Cascade/ Cascade Pro - all the functions of the GP plus you get Navigation as well - I can't believe they would yank all head units that have been manufactured already with blue tooth from retailers - there are plenty of outlets still selling these even the online beckerstore

Simon thanks but my budget is nearer to £400 i'll either wait for the Grand Prix to become available or opt for a seperate bluetooth ie Parrot and a replacement for the multi changer like the Dension or similar. My problem will be the usability of the Ipod. In the 968 i had an Alpine with direct Ipod connection. The Alpine wouldn't look right in my 911.

The search goes on.

Richard thanks. Just so i understand (being a bit thick) do you swap the wires or just connect pin 5 wire to pin 6 or does pin 5 go to 6 and 6 goes to 5, if that makes sence.

You basically have to put a switched 12v+ve to the amplifier (pin 6 on yellow plug C1), as the Grand Prix hasn't got a switched output to that pin. The easiest place to take it from is from pin 5 on the black plug. If it was me, I would remove the black/red wire from pin 6 of the yellow plug, and splice it to the white wire going to pin 5 of the black plug. I hope this makes sense.

Perfect why didn't some one just say that!

Only joking, geat help as allways.

I must get round to writing that running report!
