Been in storage

Hi
As a new member to the forum, can any one help. I have a 1987 944 which has been in storage for 11 months, after some brake cleaning and a middle exhaust box the car passed its MOT. The problem is that the gear stick won't return to nutral, it's as if a spring is broken, secondly the car seems to sit down about 10mm on the rear to the right hand side when viewed from the back. I have never noticed this before in the last 8 years and wondered if this was due to the fact the car did'nt move for this long period of time, although this did not affect the MOT.
Any help would be most appreciated.

I'd start by lubricating the gear linkage; they are prone to getting stiff and sitting won't have helped.[FONT=verdana,geneva"] [FONT=verdana,geneva"]In terms of the suspension that's an odd one. No clunking noises? Does it bounce on both sides pretty much the same? Assuming both answers are as you'd hope (no and yes then) I really don't know. 10mm in within tolerance so is it possible you just didn't notice before?[FONT=verdana,geneva"]

Thanks for the quick reply, the answer is no and yes, I have had a second thought, I have fitted GT3 wheels (prior to MOT) would this affect the rear end. how do you lubricate the gear rod I don't see any way of getting in to the tube?

I think it's the joins in the linkage around the box that get siezed through being under the rear floor. If you get underneath you can see it up the (driver's I think) side on top of the 'box.[FONT=verdana,geneva"] [FONT=verdana,geneva"]Someone must have done it themselves - I'm lazy and have it done for me [;)][FONT=verdana,geneva"]
 
Im lazy too but also tight [;)] its the linkages on top of the gearbox at the rear of the car. The linkage runs along the top of the torque tube through the bellhousing shaped bit and then there is a couple of joints with rubber and spacers they are hard to get at the exhaust gets in the way. Spray them with some spray lubricant and the problem should be solved.

It is a sod of a place to get to, even on a hoist. It is right up on top of the gearbox, the exhaust gets in the way and everything. There is also a nice rubber gaiter thing which helps to hold in the moisture and crud; and when I say crud I mean crud.[:'(]

I would recommend subcontracting - I did and only know anything about it 'cos I watched what was happening - you wouldn't believe a man could get that covered in black stuff [:D]

Thanks for all the help, you were right it was the linkage above the gearbox, not so easy to get to but once cleaned and free of gunk, I have had no problems,

On your suspension thing I've noticed in my service/repair history a bill to investigate the very same thing. The fix in my car's case was to re-index the affected torsion bar with an advisory that if it happened again it would most likely require a new torsion bar due to worn splines. Since then i've heard that it's happened to a few people, one was someone on this forum who's suspension dropped after loading up the boot with heavy gear. The other was an article in the Porsche Post about 5 or so months ago where a keen DIY'er decided rather than re-indexing the torsion bar he was simply going to replace the whole rear subframe as the torsion bars are already properly indexed within the assembly.

Not sure if this is a common 944 problem but mines been fine since i've had it and i've had a couple of occasions where there has been a reasonable amount of weight in the boot so fingers crossed!

If you can't see anything obviously wrong then it might be worth getting it checked out.

Just a thought though - are you guaging the uneveness by comparing the gap between the top of the rear tyre to the wheel arch? If so you might not have a problem as it's been established many times on this forum that the wheelarches are far from symetrical on 944's and there is usually a bit of uneveness across the rear wheel arches.

Thanks for the reply, I have been measuring the differance at the wheel arch and wheel, I was not aware of the problem with the profile of the arch, I would however like to check the torsion bar and have it re-indexed as you point out, is there a proceedure I can aquire or was this explained in the Porsche Post article.

My 85 lux sits to the left slightly, I have checked the torsion bar, tyre pressures, tracking and even the front ride height in case it was off. I have recently given up and moved on to more important problems. The wheels would not have affected anything to my knowledge. Good luck hope you find the problem.
