Been offered an SC for £3800

Hi all, newbie here! I'm just after some advice. My mate is in the middle of a very messy divorce and is selling his SC partly to stop her getting her hands on it and partly to raise legal fees.

He wants it to go to an enthusiast and has given me first refusal. I know the car well and he has been using it most days up til last month when he got a company car.

It's an 1982 SC, it has a race spec exhaust (sounds great but too loud for me!) in black. The body work is excellent except the front wings which are pretty rusty at the bottom although it comes with a set of Porsche motorsport fibreglass wings yet to be fitted.

I don't know a great deal about the SC's or any 911 for that matter! But this seems a very good price. The cheapest I have seen them is £5k+ I know the car has been well maintained although I believe at some time in it's life it's had an engine replacement.

Any tips/advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Gavin

Not a bad price, if its fully roadworthy, decent MOT, tyres OK etc. Look at service history though, find out where he has had it maintained. as long as the rust is only in the wings then not so bad - as you obviously realise they are replaceable, though whether the fibreglass wings will fit is anyones guess. Spraying them will cost £500 or so.

If he really is a mate, and not just a bloke you know from the pub, then that will take away some of the risk won't it.

Thanks for that, yep he really is a mate and is quite reluctant to sell. Just a case of needs must etc. I wouldn't have thought it would cost that much to get the wings painted, it only cost me £500 to get my MK1 Golf resprayed. It's still got a MOT, (not sure how much) and the tyres are pretty recent.

Thanks again.

Find out more about the engine replacement at that price it may be a money pit, where are you located?

Reiterating previous answer - how well do you know the guy and what does history file look like. At the price offered you can afford a couple of tyres and a service if needed. If you can afford it I would fork out the money to get it inspected at your local Porsche Dealer. Phone them for a price - Id expect it to be around £150-£200 for them to give it a good going over.

If your budget is tighter I'd stck it into an MOT garage as a minimum for £40 asking them about the engine and oil system. In the cars favour you say its been used as a daily runner.

Depending on your age you might also want to get an insurance quote first. A limited mileage quote for 5,000miles shoyldnt be bad if you are over 30 with a garage or decent low risk post code. Under 30 or 25 the costs might crank up a bit.

Good luck.

Thanks agina for the advice guys. I know the guy well, I went to school with him. I've just remebered it has fairly new Toyo Proxies on. Insurance shouldn't be a problem, I'm rapidly approaching 31 with full no claims. The insurance on my MK1 Golf road legal trackcar is £190!!

I'll have to find out where my nearest Porsche dealer is, I think it's JCT600 in Newcastle.

Pity I'd have had a peek. Find a good Independent or a specialist in Porsche PPIs like Peter Morgan, I don't think going to an MOT station or an OPC unless you know the service manager is a good idea you need an experienced Porschephile to check the engine etc. SCs are the most reliable Porsche engine made bar none but if the engine put in there is in a sorry state that counts for nothing. Tread carefully at this price , wings are about £600.00 new, add painting and preping and you're on your way to 2k. I wouldn't put fibreglass wings on a road car either unless you lighten the rear of the car equally, could be dangerous and a pain to maintain too.

I may see how much it would cost to repair the wings that are on. To be fair to my mate, there isn't much he doesn't know about 911's and I trust him to tell me exactly what's wrong but I'm probably best getting it checked out.

there are 2 SC wings on ebay at the moment
