Beesting aerial

This weekend's jobs on the new turbo will include a stereo swap. The missus is getting a new one and I'm having her old Alpine unit. Sunroof cog adjustment - not looking forward to that...

But, also the fitting (hopefully) of a new beesting aerial. I know where they go and don't have a problem with the drilling of the bodywork etc but where/how is the best place to route the aerial wire back to the stereo?

Damon (blakc 250 turbo, all standard for now!)

Oooooooh - PLEASE don't!

250 turbo, you should have an ariel built into your windscreen. Use this ... don't vandalise a nice shell by drilling un-necessary holes in it!

(Besides, beesting ariels don't suit 944's. IMHO.)

Yes theres an aerial in the windscreen and its rubbish as was the one in my S2. Hence the upgrade. Its a shame to cut up the lovely bodywork I know but I spent 4 years in the S2 listening to a choppy radio reception and it drove me mad. So the beesting is going in. If its any consolation, it'll be the only 968-esque external adornment I'll consider and I don't think they look too out of place not like teardrop mirrors which cost the earth, don't match the angular lines of the 944 and are rubbish to see out of (dons flame proof suit)!

Ther is a built-in aeriel amplifier in the 944 - if this isn't connected he reception will be choppy.

Are you sure this was connected in the ones you have? Some installlers don't know abuot it and don't connect it.

It worked perfecty in both my 944's

Same here - the built-in ariel in my S2 gives much better reception than the beesting that I had in both of my previous cars. (And that's using the same radio unit - I moved it from car to car.)

Mark - you're a Boxster owner who has owned 2 944's? What are you doing 'round these parts then? Reliving the good old days?

Oli.

Good point. The amplifier is plugged in, I'll have a bit more of a play with it this weekend to see if I can't improve things. I'm putting in a different stereo this w/e anyway which may also help.

Thanks

Damon

I agree with the teardrop comment, but mine looks alot better with the 968 door handles and tailgate.

What do you mean teardrop mirrors don't suit our cars.[:D]

I hope they do as I have been waiting to see mine for 13 weeks now.

Not sure about that aerial Mike, snap it off, will look better[;)]

Mike, is that an original colour ? I know some 968 came in Mint Green but not sure it was available on 944 ... (OT, sorry)

Mike's car is a bit of a beast from the east.

Turbo running gear that has been reshelled into an older style body shell. In a non standard 44 colour.

Weighs less than a standard turbo, rides harder than a standard turbo, goes harder than a standard turbo [:D] Oh and is a lot noisier...

I enjoyed having a drive in it.

I am sure he will be back on to elaborate

I look forward to meeting you - I do actually own a flame gun.......[;)]

HeeHee... tongue firmly in cheek............ Think we met when I had my S2 some years ago at an event at a pub organised by Andrew somebody, he had an S2 and his Dad had a 356. We did a Le Mans grid start photo that made it to Porsche post. I sat in your car then and noted your mirrors looked lovely ;)

Oli, you'll be please to learn I'm conceding defeat on this one! I fitted an Alpine stereo removed from the OH's MR2 and the radio reception is fine with the standard windscreen aerial. Lesson learnt there I think! Thanks

Damon (new 250 turbo)

Damon,

No worries! Glad it is working as it should.

Drilling holes in bodyshells is something that has always given me the willies. I have done it twice, and hated each time. (And, in retrospect, regret it.)

Hope you enjoy that radio!

Oli.

P.S. Sorry to say, I am a BIG keep-it-original fan, and prefer the flag mirrors, standard door handles, D90 wheels etc etc etc. SO, without wanting to fan the output from Mr McNulty's flamethrower, I'm not fond of teardrop mirrors ...

That was the Red Lion event organised by Andrew Mais - one of my first days out...[:)]

You'll not incur my wrath - I'm with you! In fact one of my first posts on Titanic was asking people's opinions on swapping my teardrops back to flags. The response from chaps offering to come and exchange them for free was quite overwhelming....at the time I thought they were a cheap add-on.....[]

I've grown to prefer them. An original 944 had no underspoiler at the back - but not many would remove their toast racks or turbo spoilers to show the spare wheel housing, as the original!

That's it, I guess. Some things add to the designer's intent, improving the car without trying to make it something it's not. Personally I think curvy mirrors on a curvy car look ok, square mirrors on a Transit, Land Rover or an early Panda......[;)]

I also think a fat rubber spoiler looks more like an '80s Porsche design than a bridge spoiler......

I'm not a fan of the beesting areal either. It doesn't even look right on the 968. You can get ribbon areals that you stick to the top of your windscreen. My brother had one of these and it worked just fine. If my windscreen areal ever packs up that's the route i'll be taking. Though i'd like to see what one of those shark fin arials looks like on a 944- and I don't mean one of those Halfrauds fake ones that you see on Saxo's. I mean the proper digital antennas that also back up as mobile phone areals and GPS anntena.
