I emailed the seller and this is one of the bad points he said something like "engine has top end rattle which started 4 months ago but not got any worse" now i read somewhere that i loud metallic rattle from top of engine could be the cam shaft chain on 16v engines, does that sound bad and very expensive? WHat are your thoughts?

Potentially, so long as there aren't teeth throughout the engine, it might be £1,000 to put right. If it's a nice car, if the rest if it is up together and if you can get it very cheap (like £1,500 tops, preferably closer to £1,000) it might still be viable. Worst case I can put you in touch with the indie I use who is in Honiton and is the cheapest I have seen for S2 cam replacement at under £1k llast time I heard. Unfortunately with the £ in the toilet compared to the Euro the parts from Germany might be a bit dearer these days however.
Ideally you'd want to know if there is any metal floating around through something lunching itself, but even if it has broken teeth they find their way into the sump and do little har or they cause grief in less than 4 months. If it has anything else significant wrong with it it's probably not worth the hassle and if it has rusty sills as well then it's not even worth buying for parts.
