belt screech

patch

New member
Hi guys,
Just had new ignition switch and barrel replaced, what a bore. I am sure it is not related but from the very next day I get a loud screech (a couple of seconds) on firing the engine from cold along with acrid pong (and very occasionally when warm). Am presuming it's a belt. Does anybody have any knowledge/advice/experience of anything similar. Really don't want to spend another three hundred quid this month along with brownie points in equal measure in Valentine's day week.....

It does sound like the V-belt. Get it seen to quickly before/in case it snaps as otherwise a lot of ancillaries will go (A/C, power steering/alternator etc) It's shouldn't be pricey at all.

Why the barrel? Normally it's just the switch that goes, but because it is an obselete Porsche part, the OPC will replace the whole thing. You can get the original switch from any VW/Audi dealer for about £20, and either do it yourself (instructions on the DIY pages) or get an indy to fit it for about 1/2 hours labour. Too late now, I know......

I agree with Rod - sounds like the polyvee belt. About £25 plus 1/2 hour (tops) to fit.

Thanks, Richard. I had looked at your guide and found it beyond my modest tech skill in the time available. Jaz replaced it for me, apart from the switch the barrel had jammed and was out of true - it was virtually impossible to get the key out. Thanks to both of you for the belt advice. Who is the guy you refer to on occasion who is over this way Richard (I live just north of Maidenhead)?
All the best

I doubt if it was the barrel - the switch can cause that problem. Anyway, job done.

My friend Tony Wright operates Wrightune in Wallingford, Oxon. <Link>

I had a V- belt replaced under warranty, but it was avialable under fixed price costs, about £69 last time I looked..... bargain I thought.. [:)]
