belt tension tool fek

I've titled this thread with terms its most likely to be searched for. I retensioned my balance and camshaft belts this weekend gone. I got the official porsche tool and set about taking the tension from 4.0 precise units to 2.7 units with an exact tolerance of +/- 0.3.

After adjusting the tensioner and clamping it back up my tension was still around 3.5. I then 'wiggled' all the sprockets and bits of belt and got it down to 2.5 - 2.7ish. I then rotated the flywheel 720 degrees as the destructions indicated to do. I then remeasured the tension which was now about 9 units (on the belt from camshaft sprocket to the flywheel).[]. However the belt was still way looser everywhere else - around the tensioners and other rollers. After a little wiggling but no moving the tensioner the tension changed from 9 to between 3 and 2.7.[>:]

The job's done and i'm happy with it. I know i've used the right tools and as well as can be done (i think) but... i can't help feeling that the tension is blatantly not '2.7 units'. Rather its just 'kinda slacker'.

Has anyone else done this job? Is wiggling belts and jiggling things a legitimate way of getting the tensioner to read 2.7? Note i'm posting this three days after the event. This is to virtually eradicate the profanity that would otherwise have been included.[;)]

I did mine a few weeks ago using a KriKit gauge.

It was spot on every time.

Did you set it 1 1/2 teeth from TDC (No.1 cylinder) as stated in Clark's?

I would not run the engine until you find out why.

AAagh my engine's.... nah only kiddin its fine. [:D]

i've ran it and it seems fine. I was turning the flywheel 1 1/2 teeth from TDC but the tensions were still a little wierd. I *might* hang on to the club's tool for another week and have another look at the weekend. However given my unique combination of laid-back-ness and laziness there's every chance i may just run it as is. I'm pretty sure its all done okay.

These may qualify as 'famous last words' but:
the belts look tough,
the teeth look big,
and its 500 bin-lids for a second hand engine right?[8|]

But it's only an hour of a specialist's time to get them to check it for you if you're not sure...

If your engine is a 2.7 I'll give you 1000 for it now and you can buy that other one at a profit [:D]
