belt tensioner

In the process of changing the water pump and belts on my 1991 S2. Am I correct in my belief that the cam belt tension is set by the spring preload in the tensioner, or does it have to be set using the tensioning tool? If this is the case ,what is the procedure for loaning the clubs tool? Thanks.

There are many different arguments on this mate. Some say you should use the Porsche tensioning tool even for a spring tensioner. I and many others just use the tensioner as ok. I am not advocating that you should use my experiences as carte blanche not to use one but I have changed my belts without any headaches. As long as you did the job properly you should be ok. Make sure you check the tension after some running in of the new belts.
 
When I tried to twist the belts on the new engine (old belts but they were in good condition and seemed to be relatively recent) I could turn the belt to around 80 degrees using my thumb and index finger and that had an autotensioner on. The balancer belt I could do to 90 degrees before any resistance showed up but I understand that on the balancer belt you can not even do the twist method as long at the clearance between certain rollers is correct (rcsalomns is the man to ask). The balance belt will feel loose to many when done when infact the tension will be correct.
 
You're right in saying they may look loose. The only reason for doing them is because of the water pump leak, they were done 15k ago according to the service book from the previous owner and to me they look very loose I'm sure that the right hand balance shaft is one tooth out plus there is in excess of 5mm clearance on the balance shaft belt roller.I've done quite a few cam belts on different vehicles and I would certainly set the tension tighter hence my concern that I may over tighten them.
