Belt tensioning tool

Are we the only ones brave (or stupid) enough to tackle belts.

Looks like your the guinea pig then Andy, Let me know what you think of it.

What would be the main reason for belt failure on a 944?

Fitted too tight (you would here it)?
Too loose and jumping?
Broken roller / tensioner?
Oil contamination?
Seizure of camshaft / water pump?

I would like to check mine every year to spot any problems early

I went thru the tension procedure on my 89 S2 (spring type) without using the tensioner gauge and slack was tacken up, all the rollers and belts looked ok and it has not broke yet!

I firmly believe that there is too much concern about belt tensioning, it is not as difficult as it appears, the belts are pretty strong, with a bit of common sense and regular inspection it is easily within the grasp of the home mechanic to maintain.

Tensioner tools appear to be fiddly but with a bit of practice and confidence it should be no problem.

My view for what its worth.

As I said on the 968 forum a while ago, if my belt breaks due to my incompetenece and I'll own up and advise everyone!!
