Belts and Crankshaft Pulley

In the process of doing the belts on the S2... It looks very much like I will have to remove the crankshaft pulley to get the tming belt off/on. I heard some-where that it is not always necessary... having tried an 8v 2.5, an 86 Turbo, and now looking at a 91 S2, I have yet to have found one where I could get the timing belt off without removing said pulley... has any-one? Or am I missing a trick here?

Hi Tref,
I had my engine's front end stripped down a few months ago ready to do the belts believing the suggestion on Clarke's Garage that the timing belt can be eased out past the crankshaft pulley. The reality was that it was impossible and I had to put it all back together again but at least I changed the slipper pad and made sure the belt tensions were correct. I will be doing the job shortly once I have got the flywheel lock to get the crankshaft nut undone and the pulley off.

It definately can be done, as I changed my cam belt without removing the pulley earlier this year. The belt gets a bit of a mauling so if you have plenty of time and the necessary tools, taking the pulley off does make the job easier.
 
I believe the official Porsche flywheel lock can damage the bell housing... I made my own for the S2 out of 20mm thick Mild Steel plate, bolted in place of the starter motor, and then another rough circle of 20mm Mild steel cut to just fit inside the starter motor housing cut with teeth to match the flywheel - it needs to be tapered and spaced by 15mm from the starter motor flange if you want to do something similar, but it worked an absolute dream...

Any chance of a picture, as when I get back to work in the new year I'm going to make one myself. Just a few different designs whizzing round my head at the moment.

Read a lot about tensioning the timing belt and the balncer shaft belt on variety of websites. My car is 86' 944Turbo so will have the manual tensioner rather than the later auto tensioner. Do you need the proper porsche tensioner tool or not, heard both sides whats everybodies opinion or what have you all done yourself. I have done plenty of belts on cars over the years and have always gone with the thumb and forefinger just managing to twist belt 90degrees on its longest stretch between pulleys etc. Is this acceptable, can I do this method or whats recommended, cheers for any help

As the belt will need re-tensioning anyway, why not take it to you local indie after 1000 miles and get it done properly? It will be lasting 30k/three years, so an hour's labour is not the end of the world for the peace of mind?

Thanks for the pic. I've found some pics of the porsche tool so I'm thinking of something somwhere in between. No massive rush as I havn't got the belts yet. Food for thought tho' cheers!
