Belts and water pump.

New member
Going to be booking my car in shortly, to have the belts done, but read recently that it's not a bad idea to replace the water pump at the same time. The reason given for this, is that the extra tension in the new belts can damage the water pump. Is the water pump expensive to replace or is this entire little nugget of info just a lot of s***e? [8|]
Any thoughts or experiences would be most welcome.
 
I have heard of two problems one they can leak and that requires the belts to be removed again.
Secondly the waterpump can seize and destroy the belt.

I believe they are under £100 from Mr Gear, so probably worth changing if you have no record of it being done.

It's probably worth getting the thermostat done at the same time.

When I had this done on the S2 recently, I went mad:

timing and balance shaft belt
timing belt tensioner and idler pulley
balance shaft belt tensioner and idler pulley
front end seals
water pump
thermostat

I figured if it was worth doing, it was worth doing properly...

Over £1K, but that included a new hydraulic tensioner and cam chain as well. Oh, and the retension at 1.5K miles was free ;D

I have done 60000 miles in my 944 (its got 152000 on the clock now) Chaplegate replaced the belts a couple of times and never mentioned anything about the water pump.

The only drama I have had in this area was the timing belt tensioner pully collapsing, the car made a very nasty noise from the timing belt cover area, I took the timing belt cover off and found balls from the ball bearing scattered about and the belt was very loose, amazingly it did not jump any teeth and the engine lived to fight another day.

You have to take the belts off to fit the pump so many advocate doing it at the same time as the belts and saving on the labour charge. My S2 has had two sets of belts during my ownership and both times I asked about the pump. The reply was that after '86 a revised pump was fitted which is more reliable than previously, also they thought that many pump failures were caused by incorrect tensioning of the new belt.

I think I will definitley have a new one next time tho [;)]

If the car has done 100K or more without record of a new water pump then for an extra £100 (at the same time as the belts) I would (and have) had one fitted.

Whilst this advice may be "...just a lot of s***e" as you so eruditely put it, we can be confident that our water pumps won't explode and wreck our engines where as, if you don't change yours, you can remain smug in saving £100 untill the day that it does [;)]
 
Fair comment. The car has done 113,000 miles and four years ago had an exchange cylinder head and all the trimmings, as a result of a previous owner failing to get the belts done on time!!! The water pump was replaced then too.
Will ask my mechanic for his thoughts.

Ah so it has been replaced!

As I understand, the water pump is good for 100K, it is after that that they can be a bit marginal.

It would sound like yours is well within 100K and should be OK. I think the tension of the cam belt causing wear story is a nonsence. The water pump and cam belt are doing exactly what they were designed to do.

If you were to replace a water pump every time you changed the belts (at two - three year intervals) the water pump would only do 36K odd miles.

Jeeeeeesuuuuussss!

I did exactly the same to my S2 Cab but had a full service AND new cams at the same time for £1,500. OK I had to pay for the retension but...
