Belts Needing Done + Water pump - which garage?

Hi folks!

I'm running out of spare time to do my belts, think I should probably get the waterpump done at the same time.

I'm in Stirling and work in Glasgow, what are the current recomendations garage wise for this job?

(I called Autobahn in Stirling but the chap is away for a week or so, I used Lorimer Finlay in Glasgow 10 years ago for my first 944.)

Also what's the going rate for doing the job?

Hi Strath, when are/were your belts due? Mine were due last year (4 years) but had only done 12/13k miles so left it until this year. Alasdair Cowan (sulzeruk, on here) will be doing them this month hopefully, but he is cutting back on doing cars.

I would say if he can't do them then SP Autobahn is your best bet. Phone round, don't dismiss OPC Glasgow and Edinburgh. Others are, George Morrison,Glasgow and Motortune, Shotts.

Phone round for fixed price for belts and pump, but you may need seals and rollers aswell.

Why don't you pop down to Boness on Wednesday night for the TIPEC meet, you will be made welcome and get lots of advice, not everyone uses the Forum.

Alan.

Hi Alan,

thanks for that, the car has been in storage for several years. It was fully serviced by an OPC before it went into storage but I defintely feel the belts are due and although I've done the job before I am short on time just now!

Wednesday would be good unfortunately I think I'm away with work but will see how that goes!

many thanks,

Dave

No problem Dave, send me a PM if you will make it and i'll look out for you.

Alan.

Also Brian Miller Edinburgh is highly recommend 0131 443 7806 .If you can pop along to the Tipec meet at any time 1st Wed of every month at Bo Ness Car Museum In fact most in the club are hands on guys and do this work themselves and have a wealth of knowledge on all things 944

Alastair at Stainless Creations in Falkirk can do them. He has a 968 and mine is headed over there for belts soon.

Spoke to George Morrison today and he came across as very knowledgeable so think he will be the first port of call!

Thanks for the help, will poss phone a few of the others and see what they say out of interest.

Hope to get along to the meet in the next few month.

I understand George is very knowledgeable but I would recommend Stuart at SP Autobahn in Stirling. He can be busy but I have found him to give good advice and charges a competitive rate for the quality of work done.

Regards

Dave, George is very knowledgable, but is very good with a calculator aswell. This is why I said get a fixed price first and tell him you will not pay for any additional work unless he has spoken to you first.

I took mine to him before I joined the club or came on the forum. Instruction were check and replace belts as necessary, oil and filter change, ended up with Timing belt, balance belt, alternator belt, power steering belt, several rollers, several seals, oil and filter and decoked throttle body. Bill £909. That was 5 years ago.

It's up to you.

but I wouldn't,
Alan.

If you are ok with the spanners then do it yourself. I did mine and it is not hard to do.There are a lot of people who will tell you how much of a nightmare the job is but the truth is it's pretty straight forward and can be done at home without and problems at all.

I've done it before no problems. However this car is significantly better than my previous ones and I have little spare time as mentioned. Therefore I'd rather get someone who has the right tools and knowledge give me some peace of mind.

It is a fairly straight forward job granted but I don't have a pit or hoist and is a pita!

Have you thought about SP Autobahn in Stirling? I've been using Stuart for a few years now and found him great. Honest and Fair.
