Belts, tensioner, etc checking - how often

Hi. First post so be gentle.

I'm looking at buying a 944 S2 and have read a lot about making sure the belts, cam chain, tensioner and rollers have been replaced, but I don't seem to be able to find out how often they should be inspected.

I'm looking at a car that had them replaced a few years ago but hasn't done many miles since. How often should they be inspected?

With regard to the balance and cambelts, my understanding (happy to be corrected here by expert !) is that over a period of time and usage, both these belts stretch,wear and degrade as they have a rubber content.

IIRC recommended replacement intervals are ~ 30,000 miles or 3 years. So, in answer to your question regarding the belts - if in doubt have them done, if nothing else for peace of mind !

It's not necessarily the mileage that's the issue, more the time/ dgradation factor.

With regard to the tensioner/slipper and connecting chain - definitely worth having them inspected. Years ago when I bought my S2, all I had done was the pressure pad replaced - again peace of mind and reassurance.

I'm not sure where you're based, but all of the above should be a simple straight forward job for good independant Porsche specialist or even standard garage.

The car I'm looking at had the belts done a 2 years ago and the chain 4 years ago, so I'll get them both checked.
 
As long as youve got the receiptsand check you should be fine the belts and bits tends to cost £700-£1000

I remember it as every 4 years or 48000 miles which ever comes first for the belts. For the chain I would double it for safety, the biggest issue with the chain is the pressure pad which is just a piece of heavy duty plastic 2"*1" that it runs accross wearing out and of course the belts going.
 
I remember it being 4 years / 48k miles for my first Porsche, a 1983 944 lux. Somewnere along the line it was increased - for my 1994 968 (aka 944S3) it's 6 years / 60k miles - which may also apply to the S2. I've seen questions and definitive answer before but it's maybe on the 968UK forum rather than here - try searching for cambelt change interval.
 
Belts are four years max, with three being advisable regardless of mileage so you should be ok there though if the car hasn't been used much it wouldn't do any harm to get someone to give it a look over just to be on the safe side.
