Belts!

I'm planning to get my belts and rollers etc done soon so thought I'd amuse myself by phoning Porsche Reading for parts prices. So far, £462.24! I have seen on Porscheshop's site the same (I think) kit for about £245. Any other suggestions on where to go for these parts?

Also, what should be replaced when doing this job? I looks like two belts and four rollers, but I also have a bit of an oil leak which I presume is the camshaft oil seal. Is there a definitieve list of parts somewhere?

Thanks chaps, Craig

Go to GSF and ask them how much their belts are (they are less than £180 with all the rollers and belts from memory). When you order them, ensure that they are the Dayco Belts. The tensioners that they get in are INA tensioners which are fine. Their system can be hard to decipher though which I am happy to help with parts no. wise.

I'd say you need the following:
Cambelt - with 3 rollers (2 idlers and 1 tensioner)
Balance Belt - 2 rollers (1 tensioner and 1 idler).

The cam seal you can get from Porsche which I don't think will be too much from them, but I reckon it will be your crank seal, and possibly your balance shaft seals too.

GSF (German Swedish French) do belts and rollers, but you need to identify and know what you need. Pretty reasonably priced, though. Best one-stop place is probably Bert at Berlyn Services (www.partsforporsche.co.uk).

I considered replacing the belts myself, but by the time I'd priced everything up, added in faff-factor and postage I realised I'd be spending a good chunk of money on spares that may or may not be easy to fit. For a hundred pounds or so more, I could get them fitted and not have to worry about it when I drive it. In the end I took it to an Indie specialist who discovered the waterpump was leaking, so I'm having that done as well. Glad I did, despite the cost as I'll have complete peace of mind for the next 3 or 4 years!

For me, having the peace of mind for £150 is a bargain. Recommend finding an independent Porsche specialist and seeing if their prices are significantly less than OPC.

EMC Motorsport charges around £330 (I think VAT inclusive) to change all the belts and rollers in addition to clocking the cams in cam timing wise where he supplies the bits. He's based in North Central Birmingham.

The tensioner rarely needs doing, but as safe practice, changing the chain every 80k is said to be beneficial.

Check the Promax website, they normally do a full kit with everything you need for a reasonable price inc post and vat

Great - it had that done 10K ago so all should be well.

More than reasonable I'd say - £205. I'm having a chip too... Thanks for the tip!

That will only be for the two belts and no tensioners, something most sites advertise the job for ;).

Last year's advice from Northway agrees with ChasR....I was having belts/rollers/tensioner/water pump done at 97k, and as far as we could see the chain had never been changed. Decision was that although it looked OK a new chain was a sensible precaution while they were in there.

The danger I recall from my biking days is that once chain and sprocket start to wear you're in a viscious circle, the beginning of the end being hooked teeth on the sprocket which quickly hasten the demise of the chain!

On the S2 the sprocket's part of the camshaft, so a new chain hopefully avoids the cost of replacing that...

Glad to hear yours has already been done...lucky you!

Quote from Towcester OPC recently:

Cam & Balance Shaft Drive Belts
Parts £403.44 (includes both tensioning rollers and both belt rollers)
Labour £247.50 (includes re-tension after 1000 miles)
Total £650.94 (inc VAT)

they do half price labour for older porsches. thats all in - what other prices have you guys had, parts and labour?
i havent had the job done yet - was also thinking of going to promax, but they're a bit further away. like the idea of towcester as its so bl00dy close!

If so, that's a bargain going by their rates when you consider via searching, the cheapest belt kit you can get (so as to speak) is around £160-70 (or £140 without VAT). Going by their rates of £52/hour off their website, that means it will take them an hour to change the belts in total... But then I guess it's something they've been doing for years.

EDIT: Checked their site out, and £205 appears to be the price that they sell the kit for to their customers who wish to tackle the job themselves. Not that bad a price at all for all the bits. I thought you were going to hand it into a specialist to do it, that's all :).
