Bent nose circlip pliers (thermostatic valve replacement)

Might sound like a strange question, but has anyone found a decent set of bent nose circlip pliers to remove the water stat valve in the waterpump housing? A job I've struggled with many times over the years. Any good practice suggestions welcomed! I know one might be "take it to your local trusted garage"...I'm tempted!

It's a tricky job. I ended up buying a pair of straight pliers and then bending the arms to get far enough into the housing to get onto the circlip. I used a mirror to help guide me. I would assume there is probably a Porsche tool specifically for the task and that your local OPC could do it quickly.

Editted to add: you can help yourself for next time by putting the circlip back in in it's most accessible orientation if you see what I mean. I.e. when I took mine out the circlip holes were at about 1 o'clock position but I put it back in with the holes at about 7 o'clock position which should make life easier next time.

I did just the same, bent a pair, with much longer end section than are usually available and to a slightly acute angle and a slight reverse crank at the end. This allows access to lots of clip positions.

I ended up buying a set from Machine Mart-they do a set with changeable circlip ends including internal & external -with 1 set having long enough reach to grab the circlip.
I had to "punch " the circlip round such the the tip ends both engaged given the angle of the tip ends & the length of the plier handles--seems long tips equals longer handles.

Cost £15 ,I think-if you're near Formby,Merseyside you can borrow them.Tried gently bending some straight ones but too brittle-as I recall even with the new set I had to linish the tip ends to make them fit-again longer = thicker!

Just checked their website--item CHT 686 10"--Clarke Internal/External set with straight/cranked tips.

Thanks for the tip vitesse, I think I may already have that kit, but I've found the tips a bit brittle and they snapped when I tried to pinch the clip together, plus it was still REALLY fiddly! Unfortunately I'm not near merseyside, though I'll be heading up to the in-laws soon on the wirral... It's just one of those jobs I know is gonna come up soon as the temp is slow to rise and I suspect the gasket or circlip have slipped...

When I did mine I had it out the car and bought it from jmg, and to say I struggled to get circlip the groove was an understatement as the oring just seemed way too thick and as you say I have those multi tip circlip pliers and I also snapped the ends where they were not up to the task.

What i I will say is you really need to use the old school all metal types , as they are the strongest types. I managed to fined some in my garage and that's how I managed to fit mine. Obviously whilst in the engine bay I can understand how hard this would be but if this was my situation I would probably use these old school types as long as the ends which enter the holes of the curclip are long enough? Then I would probably duct tape two lengths of metal bar to the handles to make an extended curculio plier to help not crush my hands along with a small wing mirror to see what I'm doing.

good luck with it ??
