Bent valves.

Finally got the cylinder head off the S2 yesterday after the Waterpump failed and discovered that Number 4 cylinder exhaust valves were bent to hell and number 2 cylinder's exhaust valves were slightly out of true as well. On the good side the pistons are undamaged so I have decided to repair rather than break the car. Whilst the head and cams are off I have also decided to replace the chain and slipper pads which were so brittle that a piece broke off when I was removing the cams. So i have now got a good few weeks decoking the cylinder head and replacing valves. Looking on the net though at Head Gasket sets I saw GSF were selling the S2 Gasket head set for £94, which is considerably cheaper than Berlyn/Porscheshop and design 911. The next cheapest set were from design 911 and were 30 quid more, has anybody had any dealings with GSF and is their stuff ok.

GSF are fine. In my experience, friendlier and more helpful than ECP, and often selling higher-quality stuff. I have heard some horror stories about ECP, but would (and do) buy from GSF without concern. However, I would suggest searching on the net to see if the gaskets are cheaper elsewhere, as I recently discovered with brake pads.

There are rumours around about there being a different type of valve which fits S2's, which are a fraction (a fifth, or less) of the price of Porsche ones. No-one seems to have proved or disproved this rumour, and no-one is quite sure what type of valve this is, but it could well be worth you investigating - particularly if you are on a budget. I think that Simon (944man) knows more than most ...

Out of interest, what caused your failure? Waterpump? If so, how long was it since it was last changed?

Oli.

Ouch bad news [:(]

I can vouch for GSF too. My local branch don't often have 944 parts in stock but a quick phonecall and they arrive next day

GSF are fine i have just bought a set of ignition leads for my car and at £42 were the cheapest i could find

I looked at buying a water pump off the American eBay site but was unsure about import tax etc

Thanks for that I will call in at the Sheffield GSF tomorrow then, I can confirm it was the waterpump that went, although I don't know when it was last replaced as the car only has a part service history so when I bought it last February I took it to a local independant I won't name them tho for the belts and stuff doing and they said the waterpump was fine and didn't need changing. On the paperwork I have I can't find any mention of the pump been changed although the old one is a genuine porsche part. I bought my replacement from the US off ebay I think it cost with P&P just over £120 but I did get another £18 import duty. Visually it is identical to the old one so I will have to see how it does at least next time I will recognise the sound and stop the car faster. Trying to look on the bright side at least I get a great opportunity to overhaul the head. I have just put the old pump in the post and donated it to Alaisdair for him to mess about with a view to refurbing them.

how does the import duty thing work?

how do they inform you that you owe it, do they keep the item till you pay it etc

i think ill get mine from the usa much cheaper then over here who did you use?

I have pasted the link in if it works if not type in Porsche 944 S2 waterpump on flea bay and do an international search the company is called Deutsche Parts USA and they are selling them at the moment for £113.91 including P&P when I got mine it came within a week and I have had the pump on and working albeit on three cylinders it seems ok but I will get back to you on that in twelve months lol. The bill came through for the import duty about a week or so later I can't remember who delivered it but it wasn't Parcelforce who tend to hold the property and send you a bill and then release it.

Thanks Dave - this is really timely! Mine is about to go in for a head gasket, belts, rollers, oil seals and I was debating the water pump, but at that price it's folly not to do it. Just ordered off ebay! Thanks again

Just hoping the damn car will now finally be happy for a while...[]

GSf stuff is fine. They sell the OEM belts (Dayco) and tensioners (INA) and IME were cheaper than the competition.

ill put my order in once i find out which pump will fit mine cheers

Thanks Dave but I thought I would go for the Promax kit - it's a bit more at £210 but they seem to have a good reputation and for some reason I just feel a bit happier knowing rubber bits are UK sourced. I'm happy to have picked up a few well priced parts - everything seeems very expensive at the moment!

Staggered! The water pump just arrived - from the States! In less than 48 hours!

And no duty payment requested either [:D]

Hahaha - you are such a joker Craig. [:D]

We all know that you will of course have covered all of your taxation responsibilities!

Great tip guys! I am soon about to do all the belts and rollers on my 944S2 and am chuffed to get a water pump at a sensible price!!!
Just ordered one from Ebay, you just saved me hundreds!!!
Thanks![:D]

This source of water pumps should be put up as a sticky!

When I was looking at the belt and rollers I found they were imported from Germany to the states, so I then started looking if I could get them cheaper direct and was staggered to find it was cheaper for me to buy them having made two trips over the Atlantic. Wierd.
Just got picked up the head gasket set from GSF at sheffield for £113 quid so all the other valves are coming out this weekend and going to be cleaned up and reseated and also replace the valve oil seals, I will take some pictures over the weekend and if my Dad who spends most of his life on a pipesmokers forum will show me how to shrink JPG,s I will post them.

I am simmilarly staggered by the service from Deutcheparts USA (Ebay trader), ordered 944S2 water pump on Friday afternoon, arrived monday Morning! Amazingly quick.

Ordered a part for my now everyday car (a Toyota) on the same day from a UK Ebay parts supplier and it has not arrived yet.
