Bernie Backs Porsche BOXSTER Tour

In this weeks Autocar was the following snippit which does seem hard to believe but who knows:-

"Bernie Ecclestone has backed proposals for an F1 "seniors tour" based around the Porsche Supercup, which would form part of the grand prix support programme at selected rounds of the world championship.

The series would consist of former GP drivers, all over 45, competing in the new-model Porsche Boxsters on Sunday mornings in the same slot as currently occupied by the GT3 Supercup". ..... [8D]

Wonder why the new series didn't go for the Cayman!!
 
And they should be production cars rather than special race versions, so they have a sealed and tagged engine and similar performance.

Also if they put sticky tyres on, I wonder how much smoke we'll see through corners with high lateral G[:D]

 
Whatever they do to a Boxster should be interesting and, perhaps, an indicator for what is in store for the model in the future. I am sure that Porsche AG will want to showcase the model in all its' glory and let us lesser mortals see what can/will be done to the car.

So will we all see an RS/ClubSport Boxster in the future as I suggested elsewhere some time ago? And a similar Cayman soon thereafter?

Surely Porsche AG will want to milk the publicity opportunities for all that they are worth.

Just wondering...

This is precisely my point. the book, as Laurence mentions, clearly talks about slick tyres and getting additional grip. It's also been tested and shown that using slick tyres round certain circuits gives so much lateral force that oil is forced through parts of the engine that normally it wouldn't be and normally shouldn't be, due to it's design and position, causing great plumes of smoke. Given that in race conditions this would happen at the same corner(s) every lap, at the end of a race how much oil would be left and what damage might be caused?

Some race prep changes surely have to be done. Will follow the progress with interest.

Based on the highly successful Cosworth XB Indycar engine, Nicholson McLaren have developed this normally-aspirated version offering more than 600bhp at 10,400rpm while maximum torque is achieved at over 320 lb ft at 7,800rpm. The engine combines compact dimensions, minimum weight, maximum strength and awesome power output. The 650kg cars (excluding driver) will be equipped with a six-speed paddle shift gearbox and at the opening race in Kyalami, drivers are expected to be exposed to corning g-loads of around 2.5g! Electronic driver aids have been kept to a minimum and a stable aerodynamic platform has been defined in an effort to maximise driver input, involvement and overtaking.

Don't believe Bernie is invloved with that one, Eccelstone probably trying to shoot down any competive series (he recently secured the rights to the GP1 name).

Article I read was the "Porsche Seniors" would actually occupy the Carrera SuperCup slot on a Grand Prix day, but very surprised at the mention of Boxsters rather than Carreras or even Cayman, after all the Boxster doesn't seem to be considered the "sporting" model by some. Perhaps it's a preemptive marketing move not to overshadow the Boxster with the Cayman.
