Best brake upgrade?

I love my car but feel I need more stopping power on track.

What's the best & most cost effective brake upgrade?

I've currently got standard callipers, braided hoses, uprated fluid, drilled discs and Yellowstuff R pads but I really want something more powerful.

I don't mind shelling out for a really good system but I want to make sure I choose the right one. I want my eyes out on stalks when slamming on the anchors.

I do have some standard 993 front callipers in very good nick which look bigger than my standard front callipers. Would fitting these with bigger discs make much of a difference?

I should say that I have 993 rear callipers fitted with standard pads also.

thanks

Kristian

Great question. Just came back from the Ring and would have liked more powerful breaks. Perhaps I could 'take a step up' with your 'cast offs'. PM me when you decide what you are going to do.

Hi Kristian,

check www.fvd.de for brake systems to get an idea what´s possible. You can choose English language, brakes, model 964, site navigation is pretty good.
IMO it´s not possible to get real stopping power that lasts for little money.
You get what you pay for.

I have an early 944 turbo which I believe has the same brakes as the 964 (maybe the piston sizes are different) and can recommend the big blacks. I've upgraded to the Big Blacks (off the 928GTS) which are identical to the 993TT Big Reds apart from the colour and the U-shaped brake line is fitted on the other end - the 993 had the calipers mounted in front of the hub and the 944's and 928's have them mounted behind the hub. The Big Blacks are much much cheaper than the big reds as Porsche had to do another production run of the big reds due to their demand meaning they are quite a significantly more expensive - BB's are still sourced from Porsches original production run. New from the OPC you can get the Big Black calipers a lot cheaper than you might imagine. I got mine from the states where they are the same price in US$ than in pounds and got a complete kit including calipers, adaptor brackets, OEM disks and pads for $1500 - so under 800 quid! They are the business and on track - OEM pads are perfectly fine and fade free no matter how much you abuse your brakes. Thouroghly recommended!

Cheers Scott.

The big blacks sound perfect.

Can you tell me where in the states you ordered your kit from?

I'm keen to cash in whilst the exchange rate is good.

Thanks again

Kristian

Kristian, I got them from an outfit called Linday Racing. Their link is attached below. I really liked the look of their big red rotor hats which can use the disc part of the 993TT's two part brake disk assembly but decided against it because I wasn't sure how the anodised aluminium would hold up to the salt on the UK roads and I couldn't source the disk part of the 993TT brake disk - you can only seem to get the complete assembly from Porsche.

I have no idea how much shipping charges would be. I got them whilst on a trip to the states with work and split the kit and got a collegue to carry half of it in his case. One other thing to note as well. In the states they like their brake pads positioned so the outer edge of the pad is lined up with the outer edge of the disk and not slightly inboard as per usual. This means you don't get the thin sharp lip generated around the edge of the disc as the pad wears into the disk. I was a bit suspicious of this and considered having a few mm milled off the adaptor bracket to bring the caliper in slighty on a smaller radius but since i've realised this is a common configuration in the states and so far i've had no problems. Other than that the kit is superb and at the current exchage rate cheaper than buying a tatty pair of calipers of ebay that are probably suffering from plate lift and in need of an expensive refurbishment.

Just thought I'd post a couple of pics. Here's the before:-

Aye, those will do the trick. I have got 993TT Big Reds on mine and they do the trick really well. I didnt put them on the previous owner did [:)]

Of course you could always go way over the top and go for the GT3mk2 6-pot calipers with 350mm disks.....
