Best H1 bulb (halogen)

I want to replace my main beam lights (so not HIDs) and I've been reading that Philips X-tremes are the brightest in tests.

But I can't find any H1s (only H4 and H7).

So, assuming I can't go for Philips X-tremes, anyone seen any tests on H1 bulbs and know which make/model is the brightest?

(I'm not interested in blue-tint lights - although maybe I should be - might match the HID dipped beam)

Haven't read any tests but I use Osram Night Breakers in the 993 and 968. They seem pretty good though I'm much happier with them in the 968 installation and I haven't tried any others in the 993. (When I came to change the bulbs I discovered the bottom headlight guides had rusted away, which meant that replacing the headlight units was a pain).

Thanks - I'd seen the print version of that report a while back, but they only tested H4 bulbs and the winner of the test is not available in the H1 size for 993s.

That said, reading it again now online I see the Osram Night Breaker scores 94 for brightness (Philips X-treme was 100), so the Osram Night Breaker looks almost as good. And it is available in H1.[:D]

Looking at this webpage

http://www.click-parts.co.uk/content/Osram-Car-Bulbs.php

seems to indicate that the H1 is 55w whereas the H4 is 75w/68w - I would expect this to make a difference (reduction in light unless the H1 is more efficient than the H4). However the 'luminous flux' (this is the output power perceived by the eye rather than the actual light output) appears to be higher on the H1?

All in all this may mean that the Auto Express test results may not be valid for H1 bulbs.

Having stripped down and cleaned the lights a couple of weeks ago, I still couldn't tell whether they were actually on or off.

I put some Halfords Extreme Brilliance bulbs in this week (£18.99 a pair with BOGOF deal, supposed to be 90% brighter), went out for a test hoon without adjusting the beams and drivers were flashing me because they were too bright! Has this ever happened in a 993?

Doubt they're the best, but they're cheap(ish) and good enough to light up even the back roads of darkest East Anglia.

These are newly available in H1 as 2 weeks ago they only had Super Brilliance (50% brighter), and although these are an improvement I don't think they're good value.

i got a pair of 50% brighter h1`s for my main beam from my local lidal store just to try out,
over my old bulbs they were a bit better but for 3.99 for two you cant complain can you ?

Aceparts sell 100W bulbs for main beams. I have no idea if they're legal or not.

I found that for driving in the dark, up here in the Grim North where it rains a lot, the prismatic bulbs with a yellow tinge worked best when driving with full beams, the yellow seems to cut through the rain better even though they aren't as bright as high powered ones.
