Best place for tyres?

Hi all,

The GTS will need tyres soon. Am keen on the Michelin Pilot Sport 4 S (I know they are not N rated).
Was looking at Oponeo at around £914 for the set (I'll get them delivered and fitted locally). Does PCGB have any deals or discounts that might make it better to source them elsewhere?

Anyone experienced the 4 Ss yet?

Thanks, Rich

Your local OPC will most likely give you 10% discount if you quote your Porsche club membership number but of course they will only fit N rated tires

The new Michelin Pilot Sport 4 S are really expensive tyres at the top end price wise but as already said OPC will match or slightly better a quote if possible but again will only fit N rated tyres non N rated might affect a warranty if you have one.

Oponeo are one of the cheapest ways of buying non fitted tyres if you go MPS 4s can't see much change out of 1 k ouch

Rich,

I think the only discount you'll get through the Club is if you choose to fit Pirelli P-Zeros - £50 off two tyres if they're fitted at a PC or at one of Pirelli's Performance Centres. Personally, I've always found PC's tyre quotes to be be on the high side; probably best to go through one of the online specialist suppliers.

As others have said, the MPS 4S is non N-rated and rather expensive. Let us have your impressions if you choose that route.

I've used Black Circles and Event tyres the former being the cheaper and you can book fitting at a local depot Event fit tyres on your drive or in a car park, they are kitted out with all necessary equipment to fit and balance tyres but cheaper than most suppliers.

Try Tyreleader I've found them to be good value, Internet purchase and I have got OPC to fit them in case of any rim damage which they would sort.

I used Black Circles as they offered a very competitive price including fitting at a dealer I could choose. I have used them again for the family wagon.

Hi Rich,

Sorry I'm late to the thread.

I put Pilot Sport 4S tyres on my Gen 1 Cayman S back in July. Couldn't be happier - a really amazing tyre.

I've done (I think) 4 track days on them since then, with one damp and one full wet. Was really surprised just how good the tyre is in the wet.

I was running Pilot Sport 2 N-rated tyres before that.

I bought mine from Blackcircles, total came to £852:

Tyre Details:

2 x Michelin Pilot Sport 4 S 235/35 R19 Y (91), Reinforced 2 x Michelin Pilot Sport 4 S 265/35 R19 Y (98), Reinforced

Price:

£852.74

black circles best ive found by far

now wifes car is next on shopping list so

Black Circles came up trumps for me, with a next day delivery when everyone else seemed to be saying they were waiting for a batch of my type of tyre to be manufactured.

I need to replace all four tyres on my '06 Cayman.

Any advice on whether to stick with N-rated tyres (no warranty cover issues and I doubt I would be selling the car through an OPC)?

I was thinking of Michelin Pilot Sport PS2 as there aren't many N-rated tyres in both 235/35 R19 and 265/35 R19.

Or would I be better going for non-N-rated Michelin Pilot Sport 4S?

I've already done so much other stuff to the car that the N-ratedness wasn't really an issue for me. I guess that's different if you're still under warranty or trying to keep it stock.

I think a prospective buyer would have a hard time complaining that I'd put PS4S on there though.

The PS2 was fine, and a very competent road tyre I just got very frustrated with it on track, especially when it got hot.

If it were me, I'd go for the 4S. When these tyres need replacing, I won't hesitate to throw another set on.

Very interested in your comments about about the difference between the PS2 and the PS4S on the track. I have always had the PS2 on my 09Boxster S (gen2) and found them an exceptionally road tyre, both wet and dry; and inportantlu maintain their good qualities even as they wear down which other have found to be a problem with some other tyre.

But, on track they do get overheated pretty easily and "go off" quite quickly. Having no experience of driving any other car/tyre combination on a track I thought that this was just something that all road tyres would do.

So, Im interested to hear that the PS4S doesn't do this? My car is still under Porsche Warranty so I have just fitted another set of PS2 N2s but should I have gone for the PS4S, and take a chance on the warranty?

(BTW the OPC in Leeds almost matched the best price I could find online)

Will you be at the PCGB track day at Oulton Park? It would be good to have a chat if you are.

Yes certainly I have found the PS4S to be completely different on track. There's no way I'd go back.

Your comment about the tyre overheating and going off quickly is spot on. I was at the point that the tyre was overheated after about 3 hard laps of Brands Hatch Indy, so 3 minutes.

My next track day is Donnington on the 19th October with Javelin. I'm at PEC Silverstone with the club on the 20th. Haven't got any other days booked at the moment, because I usually only book a week or two in advance.

I'm based in Central London if you want to take a look - albeit that you probably need to feel them on track to get a sense.
