Best route for wiring for hands free mike?

CCL

New member
I have purchased a hands free kit which plugs into back of car stereo - so far so good. Mic is positioned at top of screen, and tiny wire neatly folds in rubber screen surround - and that is where the fun starts!

Anyone have any experience with best route for a wire from inside the windscreen to under dash? I really do not want to start dismantling the dash, if I can help it!

Thanks.

Chris

I've not done it myself but there is somehow space to get a cable from the bottom corner of the windscreen in between the side of the top of the dash and the A post. My mic cable is on the driver's side and the satnav sensor is tucked behind the tax disc on the passenger side (and that's a thick cable).

The same guy fitted both and I'm sure he did not remove the dash, but he did take a couple of the dials out, I think to feed a cable across.

If you take the little vent off, just under the screen (five screws I think), you'll find little holes right in the corners at the base of the A pillars. A wire with a small connector will go through this into the area behind the dials. Another grommet behind the dails gets you into the cabin, however I don't think you'll need to do that to get to the stereo.

Reference taking the little vent off, this is the square adjustable airvent, yes? Reason for asking is I cannot easily see the screws to remove - but peering into a dark black vent, looking for black headed screws is interesting! Is the vent screwed in through the vent, or from outside? Thanks again.

Nope, sorry my mistake. The vent I am talking about is the one directly in front of the windscreen, the one that is the whole length of the dash. The screws are obvious when you look closely at it.

Mine has a factory fitted system, the mike is placed on the steering wheel surround (on the top) its then fed back through the dash, over the top of the ignition barrel, and to the back of the radio (its a lhd model)

I have a navigation gps item on the dash top (not fixed as I really wish to hide it but have not found the best place under the dash yet., feeding this through from the top of the dash to the radio was a royal pain (but it can be done) I had to take out the speedo, clock and fuel gauge (they just pull out) to see where the wire was going.

The saga continues! Vent off, connector is JUST too big to get through the round holes - so some very slight adjustment with a very small file is required (I hate the idea of this, but there seems to be no alternative).

The cables will be going through on passenger side, so no problem with instruments - will they just drop through behind glovebox, or will there be a round of grommet wrestling here too? Any experience that can be recounted gratefully appreciated - thanks!

Not a 100% sure on this but I think it'll just drop behind the glove box. As for the connector, would it be easier just to.... ahem, grease it a bit? Or perhaps run a little sandpaper around it just to reduce the od a mm or two?
