Best Sat nav in 993?

If you are looking for "detachable" unit, TOM TOM was the best choice for me. Very good maps and generally more useful options that in many even OEM installed modern systems

I myself use now Becker Indianapolis which I like (this is the fixed system). It was made for Porsche so it fits as original in the dashboard, very easy to use, enough useful options (although less then in Tom Tom.. the one I really miss it building complex itineraries.) and very good sound IMHO.

Cheers

another vote for Becker...

previous Traffic Pro range looks like a Porsche, after all the OEM units are made by Becker

I have the becker cascade pro, and it fits right in (little tight and you need to have patience to get it to fit), but the end result is worth it.

Completely agree - the becker is the business in these cars - but it does not actually meet the orginal poster's needs (eg move between cars and speed cameras)

Anyone solved the becker POI CD puzzle? (how to make them)

Tom Tom is fine - cheap and cheerful and does the job. Sticks to the windscreen, which is not ideal, if you have to keep removing it. I never use it - I cannot stand the voice(s) telling me what to do, but it's handy if we go somewhere really obscure. It's never fallen off the screen, to answer your question - mind you we've only used it twice.

Works fine for fixed cameras, petrol stations etc.

Must say , in for a penny in for a pound - the new Tom Tom 930 T looks very good, worth waiting to see if prices fall away from their £399 level though!

I still wonder if a dedicated Camera detection device might be best ( like Snooper?), although I gather you can not only have 'radar' detection units confiscated on the Continent, but also have the car impounded!

The Tom Tom does everything you want. You may want to invest in a Brodit mount. I have these fitted to all my cars and it means the Tom Tom just slots in from one car to another.

Google for Brodit

I agree with you I have Tom Tom 500 and it works well. I also have the Origin B2 camera detector and think this is much better than TT for cameras. It only alerts you if the camera affects you. Also has a very clear speed read out which is there all the time unless you get an alert. There is a cost for getting updates though. But then there is a charge for TT or Pocket World if you use their camera database.

However I also needed a new radio and decided to go for the Becker Indianapolis Pro with the navigation. This works very well although I have only used it a little so far. I do not think it is as easy to use as TT, but is certainly accurate. Becker has Navteq maps. Maybe I just need a little more practice in entering destinations. I will use both on the run to 9M this weekend so will probably get lost twice [:)]. I like Jane but the Becker lady very polite and does not get irate if you ignore her. Route very quickly recalculated. Also very good for phone via bluetooth.

Hi,

Anyone having problems plugging the power leads for SatNavs into the cigarette lighter?

Our Garmin power lead plugs into my wifes VW cigarette lighter OK, but is too small for the socket in the 993?

Pete

If you have problems with the lead into the cigarette lighter, just buy a different plug, they're easy to change. You need the plugs with a contact on each side; the cheaper ones that are often supplied have a single contact on the side and this pushes the plug to an angle. It probably makes no odds in a car with softer suspension but they do tend to pop out in a 993.

I've got a Road Angel Navigator 9000, but wouldn't recommend it. Spec is great, it has GPRS so you get live traffic updates but you only get them when you're in the jam already so that's not much use; it has a function for people to 'locate' live mobile speed traps but you're dependant on someone reporting one in the last 2 hours, and I've never had one pop up as live. It also tells you where there has been a mobile trap in the past but on a run to Bedford that was every single road bridge on the M6 toll. It's worst failing is that it often takes 15 mins to locate itself on startup, occasionally it's only realised where it is byt the time I've already got to work (40 miles). My old Road Angel (original) remembered where it was when you turned it off and had sorted itself and the journey out within 30 secs.

Thanks - I'll check the connector type

As we are discussing Sat-Navs... how usefull do people find the TMC features? The Garmin is a great device - stable (bought it after reading about problems with Tom Toms freezing etc- not sure if this is fixed now?) fast and seems to be accurate, just upgraded the maps with the latest version (£60)

Only problem with it seems to be the TMC traffic jam feature, it either misses large jams or gives alarms about jams which are not there - anyone else found their TMC works OK, I'm not sure of the source of the information it receives?

Pete

I have the Alpine 1-Din system (which I think is no longer available), but the TMC on that is excellent. Advance warning of jams and rerouting where necessary. It has let me down only once in about 4 years.

I guess the software / license that Tom Tom has is not getting / processing the info as quick as the Alpine. I am sure it will catch up at some time though.

TMC on Becker seems to work well - only had 3 samples of info from it in 12 months, but all 3 were correct (and before the jam)

I use the TT 720, cheap, easy to use, falls off the window [:)] (unless I lick the sucker)

Never let me down,

The TT seems to be ok......had mine a while now......they fixed the problem with freezing up. The speed camera is relatively poor (IMHO). The updates doesnt seem to delete removed cameras...so long gone motorway roadworks still appear on TT. Also, the live reporting of cameras seems to be a waste of time. I reported a camera on the M4 (via TT) for approx four weeks and its still not registered.

The Traffic update service does not always work first time but can be very useful....only prob I find that is if I take the TT route suggested (alongwide with all the other people with the TT) you never actually know how bad the traffic was...a few times I have ignored TT guidance and the jam has been minimal and was actually the fastest route anyway.

Has fallen off the screen on several occasions...very annoying......and the power connector can become loose with age (prob recognised by TT..they sent me a new free mount)

But overall it does what it says on the TT for reasonable price......gets you there.....
