I do not mean this to sound rude but the " S" does not really need any more power if you know how to drive it properly. At Bedford Autodrome last week I went out in a new GT3. The owner was more than a little miffed when an " S" stuck with him for over three lap of the GT circuit - the GT3 only really managed to pull away on the long straight but was quickly drawn in on the rest of the circuit.
The simple point is that a well driven " S" is an awesome car in its own right when driven well. However, most of us (including myself) have little idea about real perfomance driving - knowing how a car brakes and handles is more important than outright power.
Rather than go for power upgrades think about upgrading the driver first. For much less than £1,000 you could have several sessions with a performance driving instructor and a few track days. It is fairy safe to say that you will be a much faster (and safer driver) than simply trying to get more power out of your car.

Having said that I have to admit that I am a big kid and love the sound of a throaty exhaust note - maybe I am on my own on this one but I think the induction note is great on the boxster but the exhaust note is a bit on the quiet side.

1) A wicked exhaust note very Ferrari 355ish in sound but unfortunately not as loud unless I change the cats to the sports versions to suit

The car sounds fantastic, if a tad quieter than I can handle and definitely no LOSS of power.
According to the garage that sold me the system most after market exhausts rob you of power and none give you more! To get more power you would have to change the cats and the manifolds as well as the exhaust which is like a £3000.00+ bill...

I agree with whats been said already. Best is to get handling (suspension settings and tyres) and maybe brakes to optimum and improve driver skills.
A well set up Boxster or S driven with flair is hard to beat on the track. You have to counter the understeer on slow bends, but otherwise, it is very neutral and confidence inspiring.

Check the small print and dyno curve. Exhaust change alone will not give HP increase
They are simply very basic boxes and don' t give the correct back pressure or flow required. They are boomy in sound, often a waste of money and also produce less HP!
He also told me that NOBODY can design a better exhaust system for a car other than the manufacturer who has put a lot of effort into research to meet all the stringent regs and also deliver the correct performance according to the ECU mapping. The only thing a manufacturer can screw up on is the sound emitted Boxster being a classic example.
Rooke make no claims to improve on what Porsche have spent bundles on developing over millions of test miles and years, but they do claim to make a much sportier sweeter sounding box and the quality of the actual box is streets ahead too.
One final thought for you I was lucky enough to bump into Hans Laagay Head of Porsche Design, back in 1997 just after taking delivery of my 1st Boxster, he was also in charge of the Boxster project. He was interested in me as an owner and vice versa me in him as a designer. When I told him I hated the weak sound the 2.5 made and I was looking into changing the exhaust he wisely and strongly advised me that in modern cars like the Boxster the exhaust does much more than I realise and I could be opening up a can of worms!
He was dead right as I definitely think my previous Scott & Hayward systems whilst being boomy at the crucial 2200-2800 rpm rev range also slowed my cars some what having now driven standard spec cars and felt the difference. When I decided to have one more go at an after market system I researched it very thoroughly and decided it was going to be a Techart System or Rooke.
Finally went with Rooke as other owners on the email group highly recommended the product and the garage who sell them offered me a full money back deal if I didn' t like the sound or the way the car drove after fitting system. Can' t say fairer than that and as promised sound is amazing and drive is totally as before not a single Horse more or less.
Common sense should tell you if the Porsche factory charge around £6500.00 for a few extra BHP on a 996 and other tuners charge several thousand pounds also for small BHP and Torque increases there is no way changing an end box on any car is going to deliver 12bhp more for a few hundred quid.
Personally any supplier making such claims should be avoided IMO
The only thing a manufacturer can screw up on is the sound emitted Boxster being a classic example.
On the Factory Tour earlier this year, we were told by the emissions test engineers that there is a clear " sound" hierachy.
" A Boxster must always sound less than a Boxster S, the Boxster S must always sound less than the 996, the 996 must sound less than the Turbo...etc"
(Make allowances for his English and you know what he means).
They spend an awful lot of time and money to make sure that the more expensive the car, the nicer it sounds (even if it inherently doesn' t!). After all, you can' t have a 996 owner lusting after the sexy exhaust note of a Boxster can you...? []
