best wax/polish to use

since having the cab, i've tried quite a few different waxes and polishes for the car (black, non metallic 944 cabby) with mixed result.
meguires nxt is good, but needs lots of elbow grease but still not even.

turtle wax black, good results, but next time you wash the car, takes the black residue off.

zymol, again good, but as with meguires above.

auto glym super resin, very good, although the shine could be deeper and better.

borrowed some colonite and that was the best so far, deep shine and water just beads.

i am thinking of investing in a machine polisher to give the paint a good treatment to remove all the swirls and stuff and starting from scratch.

question is, what wax and polish do you guys use on your dark coloured car? all recommendations are very weclome

Make sure you clay the paintwork first. I find clay/zymol clean/zymol wax gives a pleasing long lasting result. If you don't clay, it looks dowdy very soon.
 
I like Dodo Juice. The soft stuff you apply with your fingers, leave it to dry for a bit then wipe it off. It leaves a lovely finish and beads really well but you do need to clean the paintwork up first with the lime prime cleaner, claying before that will also help.
 
Once your car has been washed and clayed
Try Dodo juice lime prime to pre cleanse ready for a wax sealant.
I find Dodo juice purple haze wax works a treat on black colours.

Sounds like you're picky about the finish, so before going down the polish and wax route, you need to wash then clay then rewash the car to get a really clean start.

After that, a DA polisher will save you hours of ****** hard work and elbow grease. My ladies bought me a Kestrel DAS6 and pads (Sonus) for Xmas, it's really easy to use, not something to be frightened of at all. Its first use was on the bonnet of my 968! Pick the correct pad for the job - there are about 4 grades, I have so far only used the middle 2.

Paint correction : Depending on the extent of swirling, I use Autoglym Bodyshop - 03b 1200 grit if it's bad, 02b 2000 grit if it's not bad, then finish with 01b hard polish. With all of them, have a water sprayer handy to keep things moist. There are similar products available from other manufacturers - the pro bodyshop we've visited twice with R25 use 3M products - but a litre of that is over £30, and you may need 2 or 3 different ones!

I recently tried a couple of Swissvax products on the 968 - I feel the cleaner fluid is good, but their Onyx wax (£70!) gave no better a finish than AG's high definition wax (£20), so I'm not as convinced as some that it's worth shelling out loads of money on Swissvax. Which wax to use is a can of worms - there are waxes from A (Autoglym) to Z (Zymol), and someone will think that each one is the mutts. Black seems to be a difficult colour, there are specific threads on detailingworld and a couple of MB forums I frequent, about the best stuff for black cars. I have red, silver and blue, so have no experience of trying to get a good finish on black.

You'll see the difference in the car, especially if you remember to take suitable before and after photos!
 
With fear I may go all Detailingworld.co.uk on you!! This is what I have used on the last three BMW company cars and currently on my re painted 924 as of last weekend.

Clay bar to remove all contaminants
Machine polish to remove swirls and defects

This is a must for the best start to a deep mark free shine.

Auto Glym Super Resin Polish is a mild cutting polish if you skip the above, will give a good shine but is only a polish and needs sealing after as it will never last the elements, its not durable unless reapplied regularly. Has fillers which can mask some light surface scratches.

Carlack 68 has no cutting agents at all, if you machine or hand polish a good sealant is needed to seal the paint from contamination and oxidation from the elements. This also has UV protection. Do one panel at a time, leaves the paint silky smooth and adds to the 'wet look'. This is durable but as it has no abrasives can be re applied as often as you like.

Collinite Marque D'Elegance, one of the most durable waxes as tested on Detailing World and beat many of the v. expensive waxes hands down. Two coats will last up to six months. Again a panel at a time and two coats with 24 hours between coats. Smells lovely.

Your arm will hurt and fingers ache after the effort. I did mine over a three day period (no driving in between!!) so not to cut corners and allow curing of wax between coats. Once done the dirt will find it harder to stick and soooo much easier to keep clean. None of these products are expensive in my opinion and far better than any Carplan, Turtlewax average Joe quick fix polishes not worthy of being applied to a Porsche!

Also recommend Aerospace Protectant 303 for rubbers, plastics and dressing the engine.

this is what i do for a good clean/polish:-

wash with auto shampoo
thoroughly dry with chammy
apply stage 1 maguires (paint cleaner) and buff off.
apply stage 2 meguires polish and buff off
apply stage 3 carnauba, let dry and buff off
apply meguires nxt as a final coat and buff off
apply gel detailer to the exterior plastics
apply tyre dressing and lastly give the wheels a coat of wax.

the whole lot takes about a day give or take. i do sometimes use after washing for a quick fix either the turtle wax black, the super resin, or last night the zymol. i have never clayed the car as yet, although its on the to-do list, and i've also a bottle of the meguires swirl remover to use when i have the time. the colonite was superb, and looking at the car after applying some this morning to the boot lid, the water beads brilliantly. my prob is that its original 22year old paint and although been looked after well, it has its fair share of swirls and minor scratches that i dont think will be removed without a machine polish. i also live about a 2 min walk from the beach front, so on a windy day, the car has a very fine mist of sandy deposits, which just after cleaning is a bit of a 'mare!! [:mad:] the front of the car also has quite a bit of stone chipping so in a few years, i'll treat her to a full respray anyway given the funds.

i do like my cars (not only, i'm just as fastidious in the house!) looking nice and sparkly, so just to get an even lustre instead of the darker/lighter polish marks will be great for now. elbow grease to get the finish is part of the process, i mean i'm the type who cleans the stitching on my car mats with a toothbrush!!!![;)] [:D]
 
Also use a lambswool mitt over a sponge and microfibre drying towel over a chammy. Both sponges and chammies at to the swirls, especially noticeable on black and dark blue cars
 
If you read the basic car washing/drying guides on here and detailingworld, they all recommend the 2 bucket wash method with a merino mitt for the top and a microfibre mitt for below the waist line and wheels, then dry with microfibre towel or cloths. Specifically, do not use a "normal" yellow cellulose sponge for washing or a chamois for drying, as these trap grit and put light scratches and swirl marks in the paintwork.

They're right - that's how I put a load of marks on my 968 - but not for the past 2 years now I know how to do it properly!

As for the Meguiars 3 stage stuff and NXT - that was what I used 2 years ago when I first got into proper car cleaning (for a show and shine). Still have most of it in the garage, prefer the AG stuff for Guards Red and Silver (my 2 current cars), the old shopping trolley was a similar blue to the cabriolet I collect Sunday so I'm expecting the AG stuff will be good on that too. Having said that, I gave my AG super resin polish to my daughter, didn't like the chalk residu that accumulates everywhere with that!
 
Thorough wash use 2 bucket method with lambswool mitt, clay bar to remove contaminents, polish i am using Omega 1 Glaze at the moment with a Porter Cable orbital polisher (the best you can get )
Use clean microfibre cloths to buff and remove polish, at present i am sealing the paint with Autosmart Carnuba Wax.
Car cleaning and detailing can be a minefield, use quality products, not Autoglym and Turtle Wax ! and see what works for you.
Do Do Juice red mist detailing spray is awful to use on my black car but brilliant results on the Kalahari coloured car.
Pinnacle, Wolfgang and Zaino products along with Do Do Juice are generally good products.
I have just got some Zymol Glasurit, Porsche orientated, will be going over the Black car with it, apparently the Mutts and Top Drawer stuff and silly expensive, though i got a deal [:)]

Recently compared results from AG HD and Swissvax Onyx waxes on my 968 coupe - I could not tell the difference, but my wallet could. AG +/-£25, Onyx +/-£55!

Just started the cleanup of the tahoe blue cabriolet - washed and clayed, started with the boot lid. Machined with AG bodyshop 02B ultrafine paint renovator, then Swissvax cleaner fluid, AG Bodyshop 01B hard polish, AG superhigh gloss then Swissvax Onyx wax. Hard work but good results! Just got the rest of the car to do now - everyone else praying for rain, me praying it stays dry as I have to do the car on the driveway!

Also tried my luck with the plastic rear screen - would you believe AG Bodyshop 02B ultrafine paint renovator, DAS6 DA polisher and Sonus 4" spot pad has returned the plastic to almost crystal clear! Should have masked the hood better though - I now have a hood cleaning problem!

Must investigate cleaner and protection for hood.
