Best way to insure an only car, 8000mi/yr?

Chaps,

Insurance time looms in a month or so. And some people on here are quoting some pretty cheap insurance quotes from classic car places, providing their cars are second cars.

My S2 is an only car, not used every day (3-4 days a week) and is not kept in a garage (it's in a residents-only parking area.)

What's the best way to find a competitive insurance quote? screentrade.co.uk and moneysupermarket.com etc etc etc; it is even worth approaching the specialist brokers?

I use Privilege for my S2, unlimited mileage etc. & very reasonable (can't recall exact figure). They're part of Direct Line now I think but were actually slightly cheaper than them. They've also replace my windscreen twice in the past 3 months due to stone cracks, and no issues over and above the £60 excess.

First Alternative gave me some pretty good quotes for a 'normal' policy where you can actually use the car, not have it garaged and have unlimited business miles if neccessary. It won't be as fantastically cheap as these classic policies and of course age and location are the biggest factors in any insurance policy

Belinda has just sorted new insurance for Jasper the Jag.

Last year we were with Barclays but, this year, Belinda obtained quotes over £100 cheaper else where.

Anyway, Barclays phoned up asking if we would be renewing with them. When we suggested that we wouldn't the caller said that perhaps they could do a better price than their original renewal quote......

"Well why didn't you give me your best price in the first place?" I asked.

"We are here to make money...." he said

I couldn't believe it. I thought I'd fallen into the ".....got to have a drop of bubbly for the share holders.." advert on the TV.

Insurance is such a minefield for varied quotes I would use the search engine to see previous threads for reccommended insurers and then contact to get the best quote.
You may find some wont insure on classic insurance if the car is left outside?

I ended up with RH for my insurance as a classic policy, but as far as I know, all classic policies insist on the car being garaged overnight. (I'm open to correction on this).

One word of warning - I regret ever entering my details on Moneysupermarket - ever since I did this back in May, I've had unsolicited telephone calls offering all manner of insurance products from people I've never heard of, but they all say it's because I insured a Jaguar (never owned one!) through a Moneysupermarket link. []

I'm even registered with the Telephone Preference Service to stop this type of call but they seem to be ignoring that too.

I got a reasonable quote from Sainsbury's (via Confused.com), however I was rather shocked to find out 6 months later that it did not include a Greencard (for European cover) for more than 3 days and they charged £27 for my 5 days at Le Mans.

Something to look out for as I thought all policies these days included a Greencard.

Peart are cheap, but the service is terrible. I won't go into the arguements I have had with them, but I definately DO NOT recommend them.

Chaps,

Thanks for your help ... for what it's worth, I have now tried privelidge and First Alternative, and they have come out within £5 of each other, and both a bit cheaper than the renewal I was offered from my current insurer.

Let's see what I can get out of the current insurer in the light of this!

It's definitely worth trying the specialist insurers. Carol Nash recently started a "˜Classic 2' policy which means that they are offering amazingly cheap classic insurance for people like us who choose to buy 944s as daily drivers instead of boring modern hatchbacks. My insurance last year with Lancaster was over a grand, but this year Carol Nash are covering me (with better cover and extras) for just over £300.

Just insured my 1985 944 Lux..agreed value £3k.comprehensive cover..mileage limited to 5000..cost me £160 for a year..and i'm only 25.. quote came from heritage-quote.co.uk

I use A-Plan now. A good old-fashioned broker who will get a good deal for you in my experience. They saved me £390 on the renewal for my Audi (albeit it was a change of car over the previous year and not really the core market of Elephant). That's with allowance for a 25% power increase, 35k miles business use and mods insured - Elephant covered the power increase but would only replace with a standard car.

Sainsbury's for me too - seem to be one of the few mass-markets that will quote for Porsche online. My '91 S2 3.0 costs me £380 fully comp, unlimited mileage. I thought that was OK for a Gp. 20 car. Especially as the previous owner paid £2600 [:-]

Chaps,

Best quote was from Sainsburys, and I took that back to A-Plan (broker I used last year) and magically £90 was knocked off their renewal price! Why they couldn't have just given me their best renewal price when they originally wrote to me is beyond me, but I am continuing as it is.

I think it comes up as £570-something for a chap over 30, on the street, in East/Central London, huge NCB and cover for class 1 business use as well.

As I said, £90 less than last year, which may offset the extra cost of petrol in the coming 12 months ... or just go on a good blow-out in the rub-a-dub.

ETA - Thanks everyone for your input. It didn't change what I did, but was a helpful discussion.
