Bet there'™s a cunning fix for this one'¦

The wind deflector on my car is in serious danger of taking off!
Its ok at speeds up to about 90 (theoretically lets say) but at 100 (allegedly) it starts to flap and breaks free of one of the clips! This is usually followed by some hasty braking! [&:]

The fixings on the roll bars are sound and they look ok on the deflector itself. However, the side that keeps popping off is a little loose.
I've toyed with the idea of getting a new deflector but it I don't want to waste the cash if I can't be sure of a more secure fitting on the replacement.

Am I asking too much of it at these sort of speeds? Should I buy a new one or is there a fix that might do the trick with the one I have?

I can tell you mine stays in ok at 150 mph across half of Germany (several trips), so it should be ok at your hypothetical speeds [:D]

You can buy just the fixings (people break them) so you could try that.
Are you sure it's in correctly? (sorry to ask, but it's easy to think it's in when it's not) You need to push down slightly to ease the deflector in on each side -both putting in and taking out.

It's fitted in as it should be Mark. Are the fittings replaceable on the deflector itself? I haven't looked too closely at it but I thought the latch part on the deflector was all moulded in to the plastic frame.

I'm gussing that the mating part on the roll bar shold be ok as its metal and is not likely to have suffered any wear.

I had a similar experience with the deflector comming out on one side, and yes it was theoretically over the 70mph limit. the clips are cheap to replace so i just used hot melt glue in the catch working on the theory that if i need to remove it i will break the clips and replace them.
I never remove the deflector anyway when i have the top up so its not a problem.
The first time it came uncliped i had to walk back down the road to pick the deflector up - never took a chance again

This is the part that usually breaks.

Look at the roll bar part. Make sure the piece of plastic where the yellow line is has not broken off.

Aha! Now i've put my glasses on, I can see the problem. The picture I've attached shows it as it should be. The troublesome side is lacking the triangular projection arrowed in my pic.

So, fixings are fine on the rollbar (thanks to Tool Pants for the helpful pics). Guess I just need a fresh pair of clips on the deflector.

Is this an OPC only part I wonder? Anyone have a link to an alternative UK supplier?

They're pennies from an OPC - Ebay sellers are selling them at a big profit.

Part No 986 561 737 01 01C

The parts are "handed". So part No for the LH or RH will only be 1 digit out ,somewhere, from the one above...just happened to have 1 sitting in the kitchen drawer!

Which Boxster are we talking about here? The 987 has a TSB relating to the wind deflector whereby the OPC are replacing or adding further support those coming loose.

Is it a left or right hand Dave? Maybe we should talk! [:D]

I've got one on order from Porscheparts guys. £4 and a few pennies! Could it be the most inexpensive part of the car? [;)]

Popolou... its a 986. Hopefully, just replacing the broken clip will make for a lasting fix.

Perhaps I should keep my top down motoring in single figures? In an mph sense. But then again... [8D]

Not sure which No. is LH or RH jimso - I bought a couple of each.

And yes, you could be right...possibly the cheapest part of the car[:D]

Dave

Left is 986 561 737 01 01C and right is 986 561 738 01 01C. Problem is, sometimes the wrong side is in the bag.

This is certainly one of Porsches off day designs. The clips are ridiculous and don't give much feedback that you have located the deflector correctly or not. And they have the brass neck to charge over 200 pound for it when new. It's a lump of plexiglass and some dubious plastic FFS.Sorry rant over.
