Between-the-seats heating control

When I bought my car, the previous owner said that the dial between the seats didn't work. Actually, it does work when it's turned up full - the fans come on and the cabin soon gets toasty. Doesn't seem to do anything at settings 1 to 9, though the motor continues for about 10 seconds if I turn the dial down to setting 9 before cutting out.

I know this control is a common failure point but does the fact that it seems to work properly on the highest setting mean it can be sorted out rather than replaced?

hi ya mate. i think that at 10 its on all the time and all the lower settings are automatiaclly turned on and off to keep the cabin at the same set temp. it does work as i tryed it on mine about 9 years ago. if you get it all nice and hot and then set it to, say 8 and leave it a few minutes , open the window and let some cold in and you can here the fans starting to work, well the flap on the heater moves to keep the same temp.

Hi Steve, thanks for that advice - as we're in cold weather at the mo I'll try it out in the morning. Before, I've tried leaving it on the other settings but the cabin gets quite cold so I wasn't sure if there was a thermostat at fault somewhere as I've always had to switch the dial back up to full to stop meself freezing, and fans don't seem to kick in unless it's on full. I'll try what you suggest tomorrow morning, though.

One thing you could check is the sensor on the dash small round grill. this is a temperture sensor there should be a small fan drawing air over a sensor, check the fan is working
 
Setting 10 means that the electronics have no control, just a manual fully open system.

The electronics are controlled by 2 sensors, 1 in the dash, 1 outside (engine compartment, I think).

So, it could be the electronics (expensive), the electrical connectors (cheap to unplug, clean, replug), or the sensors.

Fixed mine years ago by taking the whole centre unit apart, cleaning it, the re-installed.
Having said that, I enjoy fixing/understand car electrics.

John is almost correct - two sensors - one behind the ashtray, the other is on the left side heat exchanger pipe work. (a white wire leads to a probe mounted on the pipe). This sensor looks for warmth in the incoming air.
Dash sensor controls interior temp. Read the article.

hi again, on 84 cars the int temp sensor is not on/behind the dash it is a small pole that sits on the roof just in front of the mirror.
it was moved on later cars.

ps. if you do test it in this way, listen for the little motor in the box between the seats moving as this is what opens and closes the flaps due to the temprature changes.
 
Hi all, thanks for all the input to helping me to locate the source of the problem with this. I haven't had a chance to investigate yet but hope to try it out this weekend. First, I'll need to get some tools as I have currently got the grand total of zero - but, this is as good an opportunity as ever to start buying!

Will post an update when I've found (or tried to find) the cause of the problem.
