BEWARE Boxster 986 3.2S Engine Noise

On a recent R6 drive out, I noticed a sort of scraping/rattle noise coming from around the engine bay of my 986S. On return, I jacked the car up and noticed that two heat shield outer fasteners had 'broken through'. I made some oversized washers and secured it all back together, ran the car and yes it was a lot better but there was still some annoying noise coming from the engine bay but did not seem to be linked to RPM nor speed.
So it was time to investigate further... I decided to replace the drive belt, which would give me an opportunity to inspect the ancillaries and that's where I found the culprit. After accessing the front of the engine and after removing the drive belt, I spun the water pump by hand and it made a very loud noise. The bearings were absolutely shot, there was no water leak but total failure would have been imminent.
Moral of the story, do not ignore sudden onset of an unusual noise from you car, get it inspected and rectified otherwise it could be very costly.
I am so lucky to have done time in the motor trade and was able to sort the car myself: Drive belt £54.48, HD water pump and gasket £149.22 courtesy of Design 911.
Now looking forward to more runs out [:)]

Good news getting your car sorted with the minimum amount of outlay especially as you are capable to do the work yourself.
Happy days [;)]
