Big Badda boom!

Was in Diss last Friday to see the kids (who were staying with grandparents for the week). Took a drive into Norwich to catch a film in the afternoon and on the way back at a section of duel-carriagway as I was overtaking a fellow traveller I heard a bang and jolt not unlike the engine cutoff point if redlining. Other than that initial moment there was no loss in power.
I was accelerating (as we'd just come off a roundabout, but wasn't booting it, doing 50-55mph at the time, when I looked in the rear view to check it was safe to move into the inside lane I could see nothing but smoke. Needless to say I pulled straight into a layby. Loads of smoke pouring out of the exhaust with a fair bit of oil too.

Thankfully it was middle of the day so very light traffic on the road - hate to think what could have happened with bad visability on a busy road.

Got the car towed to the garage where there grandfather works

I send up the original turbo last weekend in the hope that it would be ok to use as a backup if the K27 was knackered

Got a call today to say that the nut from end of spindle that holds the impellers in place has snapped and has mucked up the insides of the unit and it was beyond repair, and apparently my original unit is also beyond help which I am a little surprised at.
Fair enough it's been sitting around for 17 months but would have thought it could be reconned.
I thought these units were pretty much bullet proof so can't get my head round how two are apparently useless.

Anyone got any ideas as to what could have caused this to happen? I had a full engine rebuild not 6 months ago so am praying it hasen't caused any other damage.

Needless to say I'm a little deflated at the mo - and not too sure as to my options.
Anyone know of somewhere I might be able to source a replacement turbo???

Anyone else sufered this sort of thing in their car (hope not)!

Thanks,

Andrew

ouch! suppose a compression check is worth doing in case the engine sucked in any oil and broke any piston rings, might be worth trying to buy a new turbo because a cheap one off ebay may be as bad as your own. bummer after just paying for a rebuild.

Hi Andrew. Been 2 busy 2 read the forum. So belatedly what a $*&%%$! big sympathy.

Whats the score now?

BALLS.............
Now that is what i call unlucky. Cant see how it would have caused any damage other than to the turbo itself, you should have the oil changed however before you do any other miles in it .

Hi guys,

Thanks for your replys. Well here's the latest.
Got a new turbo (k27) all fitted fine and dandy. However there was a tapping noise coming from the engine & a lot of oil being lost. A full tank in 400 miles. My specialist couldn't find any obvious leaks and has stripped the engine down to discover #5 barrel has totally split so needs replacing.(

Prices from Porsche are £500 plus vat and are only sold as a set of 6 = big £'s.
Looking for a second hand piston & barrel now. Have no idea where to look for one as the chances of getting an individual #5 set I imagine are remote. They are specific heights and weights too! Nightmare.

Things aren't good at the mo!

Any advise suggestions would be VERY gratefully recieved!

Andrew

OO sorry to hear that try Bob Watson , not Watson Autoparts, G-Force and 9 Meister to start with.

Andy

Not a good day out at all. Do you think the split barrel is related to the failed turbo ? S'pose it must be. But are the other barrels/ valves in good nick?

Separate point, but thinking back a bit did the new turbo run at the right boost pressure - I seem to remember the old one was running way up.

Commiserations. I may have to head down to Kent and get you out for a spin!

All the best

Jerry

Cheers Bones Will give them a try. Do you have any contact numbers???

Jerry,

Think the only thing that could be the cause is the oil from when the turbo blew got into the barrel, when the car was started the piston tried to compress the pressure grew and something had to give.
All other barrels etc look ok though.
The boost was reduced from 1.2 to 1bar. Didn't get the chance to check the boost / over boost situation on a rolling road.

A trip out in your motor sounds like the sort of remedy I could use. Thankfully my brother has a nice 968 cab which I'm allowed to take for a spin once in a while.
I will keep you posted on my progress.

On a different note - How do you explain to the woman that despite all these probs you've had and £'s spent I can't think about selling the old girl, despite all her points making perfect sense.

Thanks

Andrew

I know what you mean. Just booked the SC in for a gearbox re-build and err no I didn't tell my woman yet.....

How about going for sympathy - did you try looking real sad and waiting for the maternal instincts to kick in? If that fails you could always brighten up at the idea of parting company with the beast and show some serious interest in even less suitable forms of expenditure - maybe a large motorbike, powerboat or joining a cult![;)]

Keep the faith
