Big headache sell or keep

Leraned people of this forum i have a big dilemma going on at the moment which may end up selling both 944 Turbo's.
Come April i wil have a cheque landing for a considerable amount, this amount would enable me to purchase a 996 Turbo which i have always fancied.
Manmaths has worked out that i can sell both 944's along with various spares, Fuch and CS Wheels etc and still take a sizeable chunk off my mortgage percentage wise which this cheque was intended for originally.
I am presently looking at possible cars but will take my time finding the right spec should i decide to go for it.
Taxed the 220 today and instead of doing a few tinkering jobs i have driven it and i am now questioning my possible move away from the 944. love it's looks and the way it gets down the road, plus i have the "classic" Porsche thing going on.

HELP !

Your comments may well go to making my descision either way [:(]

Without sounding like I'm a vulture circling a potential meal......first dibs on those rear Fuchs please. You know they'll be put to good service [:D]

i am hunting for 944's so will take one off you all fits. does that convince you to sell?[;)]

Not without sounding like one :)

On a serious note , chances to have your dreams / life experiences happen don't come often. You've done the 944 turbo thing havnt you so do the 996 turbo thing too its what life's all about.

If a similar cheque landed on my door step there is no doubt I would buy an Aston straight away .

Good luck

Mas

Or, if the maths allows, keep one 944 and get the 996t as well. Keep the best bits from the spares and sell the rest.

We've spoken already about this Jim and life's too short for regrets. Enjoy every second and if it ticks another of your life goals then do it.

Plus points : Supercar performance for little over a BMW 320d money. Decent servicing costs so long as you don't put crazy miles on the clock

Negative points : it's a modern Porsche and has no soul or passion. The build quality isn't as good on tne newer cars and interiors are a bit naff.

p.s. Keep the CS wheels for me [;)]

Either way you won't have an issue selling that awesome Turbo S or the Kalahari 220 [:)]

I've had 3 fairly long termers inc a 944t, if I could I would go 996 partly through boredom and partly through rust!

The general chat seems to be a 996 4s is a future classic and with similar looks to the turbo might be worth a look unless you are a boost addict - who isn't!

Factor in an rms / ims redo if you want peace of mind!

Also don't rule out a cayman!

Why do you have two 944 turbos? There must be a good reason, you can only drive one at a time etc.

I'd suggest selling one. The 996T makes more sense, in a way, with a 944 turbo alternative, than two 944s do. You've always got the fallback if the 996 fails to light your fire, or you get it out of your system. You know that the remaining 944 (I'd guess the S?) is good enough to be holding it's value, perhaps even increasing.

Mortgage rates are so low ATM that it's possibly the most affordable time to pay off a bit less than intended? You know that the £15K or whatever is tied up in the 944 will always be easy to free up if needed.

Cheers Peeps,
The Fuchs if selling will only go as a full set (Genuine 951 Items) Martin the CS wheels are yours (If selling) they have never been on a car since refurb in sparkle silver with one tiny chip from a tyre fitter after being told to be super careful (Kin Nugget).
Soli, there well might be a genuine 88 Turbo S for sale in Black, currently SORN but soon to be back on the road, Huuuge history and my car twice ! so good i had to buy it back !
Not running at the moment as it has devoloped an awkward bloody electrical fault whilst off the road in winter, need to make time to sort it out but it is coming to no harm tucked up, i have been cranking it over to keep oil around the oily bits.
Learned people, some more "man maths" have convinced me that i may be able to keep my earlier 86 car by buying a cheaper ! 996TT i have saw one that i may view next week, check the Iris Blue car at the Supercar Rooms, low spec interior with no sat nav but that is no big deal to me but it has hardback sports seats, wheels need repainted silver though.
I have had 996 TT owners commenting to me in the past about my 944 Turbos who have had one and wish they still had it [:(]

Give your head a good shake Jim, you're a 944 man, are you not the same man who told me last week "don't sell the 944"

996T, doesn't do anything for me, looked at those that you sent me, can't see what the fuss is about, interior is awful and if it drove passed I wouldn't look twice, Jak says you'd just look like another flash Harry instead of a classic car enthusiast.

Do the sensible thing, chip the mortgage.

Hope this helps [:D]

....wait for the 997.1 TT to reach £25k (about 5 years), then sell your Kalahari for £17.5k (its market value in 5 years) and buy the 7.

but you will regret that sale.

You can't sell the S ........

I've run a 996 Mezger and they are faultless to drive (if you can accept cable change) but do lack the character of "pre-Toyota lean manufacturing" Porsches.

George
944t

Paul, the Turbo's that i own are completley different cars to drive, the 86 being a earlier non ABS car with softer suspension and a smaller turbo which spools up pretty quickly,( i saw 130 quite quickly today on a private road of course) today and it is basically factory, whereas the Turbo S which is modded is pretty hardcore, quicker, harder suspension. both are a joy but are absolutely different cars to drive...............hence two [:D]

Strath the 996 TT has a Metzer engine derived from the Le Mans GT1 cars, with no IMS/RMS issues, hence the Turbo option (Plus BOOOST [:D] ) for not much more £££ then a C4S you are driving the Turbo, there is a cracking looking C4S runout model for sale right now which looks the mutts but it would make me paranoid listening for noises and watching the dash lights for imminent 10k engine failire, i love the Caymen Gen 2's but out of budget at present.

Need to check the lottery ticket and if it comes up the 944's will be with me to the grave !

RUDDY, are you on the "Jack D" [;)] Seriously though, you know me and i am into classics, and as George E as said makes" food for thought" George you have me suused !, i have been a capaigner for the "944 will rise in value" cuase but that is not what it is about as that thought never entered my head when first buying.
The 86 Turbo is a different car to the later Turbos, and they are both brill along with the other models i may add, i love them all, an early Lux would also be nice.
I never buy to look "flash" not me, i buy for what it is, i have never harboured badge or new car snobbery, bloody hell i have a thing for the Skoda Yeti (Seriously) i may get down to Worcesthshire to look at the early 996t which if bought may allow me to keep the early 86 car stretching the budget [:(] and with explaining to do indoors, the 88 Turbo would have to go if bought one purely to it's value.

Bugger Buggger Bugger []

I think it's a nice dilemma,996 turbo is modern and will be super quick in all weathers, life is short you can always go back to 944s if you want to.

The classic type of decision us petrol heads face frequently.
For me, if the car you have is fun, feels special, puts a smile on your face and gives you a sense of satisfaction then it is probably a keeper. If your current car always leaves you with niggling doubts or issues and you are constantly wanting to change things to make it 'just right' you might have a dream to chase elsewhere.

One thing I have always done is accept that I will own more cars than I want for a short period by driving my current car to see the potential purchase with a view to buy it and sell the old one later. Back to back drives and being honest with yourself about whether the 'shiny new toy' is worth cashing-in the current car is very helpful in my opinion.

That said, I set out to buy a focused track car by selling my 964. Ultimately I found a good track car (944 turbo) but could never bring myself to sell the 964. It's only money [8|] and you can't take it with you (man maths!)

Best of luck,
Mick

Frenchy,
I would agree that the 996 Turbo is an absolutely fantastic car (EVO Car of the Year, don't forget), but.... having owned one, you will discover that actually it's too good for the public highway and everyone's just in your way!

I owned a 996TT for 3 years and it was so much better than the 993; modern, responsive and yet stable. I was initially happy to discover that it's abilities just get better with speed (good aero), however this means that I was always desperate to get up to (license-losing) speeds to get the adrenaline hit and that becomes just plain frustrating; it was actually a relief to get rid of it, even though I live in relatively un-cluttered Devon. Amazed I still had a license (or my liberty!), to be honest.

The car is set up to understeer quite a lot (slow in fast out, still) and eats tyres due to heavy (non-adjustable) camber - it's set up to be driven hard, but traffic/pussy speed limits won't allow it. There is also a lot of tyre roar on poor roads and do try to get a carbon-heavy cockpit, as the standard plastic is not good. Also, get a PCM II info system as the PCM I is drawn by primary-school kids.

I've come to the conclusion (after lots of experimentation!) that there is no such thing as a dream car for most of us, there's only a dream road, which is a very, very rare thing these days (and why we love track days). So don't think any modern car will be better than a 944; in many ways it will be worse.

Russ

p.s. Get a GT2; that will fill you with adrenaline at any speed :)

I have never let lack of garage space affect my decisions (I just rent another garage).

My advice is don't sell, because you will regret it. If I had to choose one then Id keep the 1986. This might surprise you but you will recall that I owned an M758 a long time ago so they don't have the halo for me that they do for some. Factor in too that only Rose Silver cars are likely to appreciate more than other '88 Turbo S (/Turbo SE in the UK) models, rightly or wrongly.

I suspect that an 86 will show a clean pair of heels to a fat optioned-up 1988 car too.
