Big problem with Cayenne S 05 Auto

Hi all,

Thanks for all the help last time. I need it again please.

My car has developed a bit of a problem. The ABS and PSM warning lights have started to come on when I move off. It has no major affect on the car so I stop and take the keys out, wait a few seconds (whether I have to or not but I am in IT so this is normal for me) and then its fine. The ABS light remains on for a second and then as I move off it goes out. Possible ABS sensor issue maybe?

Anyway this has suddenly got worse in that today, I moved off, the lights weren't on I don't think, hit about 1500rpm and the engine/drive to it just died and car sort of went totally quiet. I kept my foot down as I had pulled on to a fast road and cars were approaching fast behind me and the car came back to life for a few seconds with but almost no power and then died again! I stopped the car, keys out and waited for a few seconds. Started it again and nervously moved off. It was fine. No warning lights and car ran fine. I then left the car for about 3 hours, started up again, hit about 1500rpm and the same thing happened. Again, I took out the keys, waited and started again and it was all good, the car ran fine with no warnings.

The car runs so smoothly, the engine is quiet until you say so and everything about it is excellent.

Very strange behavior which makes me think it must be electrical!

As I am writing this, I have also remembered that it has a Parrot blue-tooth system in it which has got some "issues" but that could be a red herring.

Any ideas here as to what could be going on potentially before I end up being completely bent over by the garage/dealership?

Many thanks everyone

Ben

Not much to go on and you really need to get a system tester on it. You can't do much with the newer cars without one. I would say it's essential if you want to work on a Cayenne. At a complete "educated guess" i would suggest you may have battery issues or possibly some form of battery connection issue. But that is a wild guess. Pin the tail on the donkey without a system tester. Take a close look at your voltmeter to see if you have decent voltage whilst it's running and when engine isn't running. +12v when not running and about 14-15 v running. Ignition key switches can also be problematic, though not sure it fits your symptoms.
Durametric sell a good system tester but it ain't cheap.

Cheers Laurence.

The key itself hasn't caused any issues but there have been a few cases where the ignition has just failed to happen when the key was turned. Almost as if the solenoid (it sounded like anyway) kicked in and then straight out, no ignition. But the next key turn it would start.

I have good voltage when running but I will check when not.

Maybe a new battery will solve it but I will put the meter on it and test. I was reading something about a wheel sensor in relation to the abs system which can cause problems but I wouldn't think that would cause the cutouts.

Thanks again

Ben

One other possible suspect would be crankshaft / flywheel position sensor . Intermittant fault on that could cause your problem. I think the Abs issue is likely not related to your cutting out. You "should" be able to run without abs . It should fail safe. You really need to pull some codes to find your problem.
