Bilstein HD or Monroe shocks for M030?

I want to retain M030 orientated suspension, but I'm not sure if I should go for Bilstein HD shocks or factory spec Monroe shocks, to go with Porsche factory spec M030 springs.

Is it better to go with Bilstein HDs and if so where should I source them from?

Cheers

Sam

Not sure which would be best to go for, but I went for the bilstiens. I have always used them with no problems and have been perfect for me.
I purchased mine as a MO30 kit from Gert at Carnewal www.carnewal.com. The fronts have extra thread on them for ride height adjustment.

Many thanks for the advice, I've been in contact with Gert and will order the Bilstein's from him to replace my Monroe's, as even though Sterling is weak, his prices are still competitive. Gert is quoting £848 including taxes and delivery, Design911 are £1015 including taxes and delivery.

Sam,

I just had new Bilsteins fitted to replace the original 50k mile Monroes in my (original spec) M030 suspension last weekend. I'm delighted with the result, she felt like a new car on the drive back. Looking forward to driving on some familiar local roads this weekend.

I recommend looking into taking your car to Carnewal as Gert's installation charges are very competitive, (even with the weak pound, ferry and petrol costs taken into account) . I had RSR exhausts and HIDs fitted at the same time, and am very pleased with them too. Gert is a great host and did everything in 24 hours.

My wife enjoyed the trip (we did a day's sightseeing each in Ghent and Brugge) and expressed her approval of the new sound and feel of the car, so a great result !

Hi Rob,

Many thanks for the insight into your great experience Gert. I'm asking Gert to send out the dampers and having them fitted by Ray at Northway. Ray is coming in at £225.00 or 4.5 hours labour for a suspension re-fresh with new dampers and springs.

I don't want to put too many miles on her, plus my workload is nuts at the moment, otherwise I would have loved the drive down there.

Really looking forward to feeling the difference between the Monroes and the Bilsteins. I've tried M033 dampers and springs to replace my factory M030 set up, but it feels a bit too floaty for me during high speed cornering, so the plan is to go back to M030 springs and Bilstein B6 dampers.

Not sure how low I want the front end though.......any ideas on optimum ride height to match factory M030 settings?

I'm heading out to see Gert on Tuesday to have RSR's fitted, can't wait to hear the car sounding as a Porsche really should!!

He also has a guest house next to the garage, he only charges 30 Euro per perspn per night to customers.

Phil,

Maybe you'll get my exhausts after they have had the RSR magic worked on them [;)]

The sound at idle is wonderful. Accelerating on the open road is great too, but cruising on the motorway is no different to standard, unless you are going up an incline, when you can pick out the exhaust note. Cabin noise is still dominant.

Have a good trip.
Rob

PS: The breakfast is amazing. You won't need lunch. Oh, and there's beer in the fridge. What more can you ask ?

[FONT=verdana, geneva"]I heard 40k miles was all the Monroes are good for. I was recommended to try KW Variant-3 coilovers - http://www.kw-suspension.com/us/kw_variant_3.php

I had them fitted by KZ Machtech - about £2000 inc labour and VAT.

I understand that they don't rust - unlike Bilsteins - apparently.

Hi Maurice, thanks for your suggestion, I was thinking along those lines...any lower and I'd be kissing the tarmac I guess! [&:]

BTW, did you get my 993 Register form by email? Sent it to you 12th March.

Just returned from Gert's having had the RSR's fitted - wow, what a transformation! The Dartford Tunnel was real fun [:D][:D] Like you say Rob, the breakfast and fridge full of beer are worth the trip alone.

Back to the original thread, I was discussing suspension systems with Gert whilst I was there, he said that original fit Boge and Monroe were neither particularly good quality - built to a price. Bilstien HD's look amazing and perform well by all accounts, however, Koni have two new systems available for the 993. One has an adaptive damping system which sounds interesting (essential for the roads in Belgium) the second has top adjustable front dampers (I had these on my 3.2 and they were great) with adjustable spring plates front and rear. Worth a chat with Gert if your thinking of a change, I'd recommend a trip over to him for fitting if you fancy a few days away and its only an hour and a half from the tunnel.
