Bistein HD Dilema

My plan has been to fit the M030 suspension kit with Bilstein HDs to my car and to set up the ride height and geometry as per factory M030. I was just about to place my order with Carnewal when Gert informed me that he only has the standard HDs without the extended thread in stock. He has advised that I will be able to achieve very close to factory M030 ride height (but not quite).

Should I go ahead and order? or wait until he has the HDs with the extended thread available? What are the implications? Will I even notice the difference?

Cheers.

I fitted the standard HD's, as after discussions with Gert he confirmed that the extra thread was for US cars to get down to ROW ride height. I am currently running M030 height and could go lower with the standards so you will be OK.

Alan,

I had a very similar conversation with JZM about a year and half ago who said the same thing, I just think they have a downer on the HDs as it competes directly with their product but at a much lower price.

Personally I thought the 993 felt soft, this was my 2nd one and the first felt the same way. Now I did not come to this conclusion overnight but it was more due to the fact that as I learned to drive the beast I could push it harder and that was when my dissatisfaction started. The fitting of the HDs and H&R springs in place of the M033 setup I had transformed the car, both on the motorway and on A roads. It is firm but not hard although over a bad road surface can be a bit crashy, saying that my wifes car is almost as hard on the same bad surfaces. I also fitted the H&R springs as I felt that for the money it would be better to have fresh springs as well as a proven package, against the OEM M033 springs which may not suit the dampers as well.

Also asked the wife what she thought of the suspension to try and get an unbiased few and she thinks it is alright, fine ............! Not scientific but it gives another perspective. Also last week drove 250 miles non stop on motorway and A roads and got out the other end feeling fine, in actual fact could have kept on going.

Comparing it to other cars, it is slightly firmer than my wifes ZT-T with sports suspension and firmer than a 996 cab I was in recently, but that to me just felt like a saloon car. A good source of info would be Rennlist as the americans have practically adopted this as the must have mod to sort out the US spec 4x4 ride height and floaty ride.

If you want to have a chat on the phone PM me and would be more than happy to discuss further.

For anyone interested Gert is doing a "deal" at the moment on the full MO33 kit. Works out at around 700 Euros including VAT and shipping. Kit includes all parts. I haven't taken part in teh chocie of 30 against 33 kits but he agreed with me that 33 probably better for my cab (yes yes it's a taxi. not) to save too much scuttle shake with a harder set up. Just ordered and due next week. Happy to let anyone know how it feels. Track days plannned..

Hi - really interested in how this turns out [:)]

I keep looking at the various options, and wondering which would be the best way to jump. Having a cab complicates it quite a bit, as you are more wary of stiffer setups, but never know how stiff is too far, as it is personal, and most of the feedback comes from coupe owners.

What is included in the kit?

Cheers

After much deliberation I have decided to upgrade my suspension and fit the M030 suspension kit with Bilsteins. Also my front control arm bushes have gone so I will be replacing the lower arms too. Does anyone have an idea of likely labour cost to get this installed and the alignment performed?

Thanks, Rob.

Rob,

You could do it yourself, alternatively to have it fitted and full alignment check will cost around £250 - 300 going from memory.

That seems cheap. My independent was asking for around £600 + VAT for the work and another £150 for the alignment. Am I being fleeced?

Rob,

You are being fleeced.

Just dug out my reciept when I got the work done for fitting suspension and it was £227.50 not including VAT. Also got a full alignment by the company that used to do all the cars for the OPC until they moved, he still does the problematic ones, last month for £70. He uses a fully computerised machine that gives a full print out of before and after.

Pete,

Details here: http://www.carnewal-europe.com/main.htm- -it's one of the packages on the opening page.

Maurice - do you still have the part worn protection bar or has it been snapped up?
