Biting the bullet

So, in a flurry of self justification (new warranty due and have now tried the Gen2 models a few times) I've decided to trade in the red one for ... another red one.
Thanks to Lewea for the tip on resale values, clearly there is a bit of an incentive for the dealers to shift metal this side of the New Year. After a good clean up of my Gen1 I got a good offer, and a build slot to be confirmed but probably in only a couple of weeks time. So a fun afternoon spent speccing the car yesterday, and looks like this:

Gen 2 997S
Guard Red
Black Leather
Sports SeatsThree spoke
Multi function steering wheel
Windscreen with grey top tint
Seat belts in Guards Red
19" Carrera S II Wheels and wheel centre set
PDK
Sport Chrono Plus
Extended Nav 3.0
Telephone Module
BOSE
Universal Audio Interface
Cruise
Park Assist
Auto Mirrors
Rain Sensors
VTS
and the famous floor mats!

Similar to what I currently have, but no sunroof (hardly ever use it) but the biggest change is the gearbox which I've been very impressed with on the limited experience so far.

Pretty excited and not the normal months of waiting, so I'm promised. We'll see.

... and a build slot to be confirmed but probably in only a couple of weeks time. ...

As they say, every cloud has a silver lining.

But seriously, this does mean they are very short of orders.

Two weeks will be their minimum build slot allocation time, given the need to scheduled timed deliveries of sub-assemblies from third parties. So they have absolutely no forward order book. Gulp.[&o]

Great news - do the consider the PASM sport with -20mm and LSD - I have it and it is great - best value option!!

mex99 can't go lower than standard as my drive is on a slope and I touch the lower lip spoiler on the way out as it is. Heated seats - pah! they make me feel as though early and serious incontinence problems have mainfested themselves.

LOL! They sure are toasty though!

I'm sure you going to love the PDK - my next Porsche will certainly have it.

Hope you got a good "discount"!

For those who are seriously considering an upgrade from Gen 1 to Gen 2, there are some very interesting points in this round of magazines. Of note:

1. C2 PDK faster than C2S manual until about 100 mph..... How often do you drive over 100?

2. C2S PDK faster than Ferrari F430... yes really!

For those purists who say they will stick to a manual, I would suggest they get some time in a PDK car. It grows on you, even if you are a purist.

Thanks chaps, your experiences with the pdk on the forum confirmed my decision to go for my first 'auto' 911.

Get a quote to have your drive leveled - the PASM sport is amazing!!!

BTW - PDK is not an auto - it is a manual without an old fashioned foot operated clutch.

I went out for a burn this morning - did a few miles in sport plus - rpm didn't drop below 6000!!!! I do tend to leave it in auto here as I can't change up quickly enough!!!

I have the heated seats and steering wheel - great on these cold mornings...

i hate to be picky -but you are hopeless at this consistency thing[:D]

only joking-good to hear you are having such fun!!cant wait to get mine-still working on linda.....

Yes, I had a good session with an instructer at Chobham a few weeks ago and thought that the box was brilliant left to it's own devices in sport mode. Which is why I plumped for this system rather than the manual, with the bonus of no power loss through a torque converter.

Nice one Peter [8D]
However I do quite like the feeling that the heated seats give [;)]

Leather on a cold morning does make you appreciate it!!!

Hi Peter,
Your post is well timed as I'm also looking to appreciate some of the dealer /porsche GB incentive for my part ex Boxster S, although having a deposit on a March 09 C2S car the incentive would get me to cx now/before xmas however my opc has told me the incentive is only on the uk dealer stock Porsche cars not a customer order self specced car. The thought of "discounted" Gen 2s hitting the road now has already had me talking to opc about cancelling my order for March. Alternatives I'm considering are a year old ish 997TT for the same money as new mid spec. C2S Gen 2 or keeping the Boxer and going for a 996TT.
Before I hammer down the door at Norwich and beat them up over current incentive perhaps not being just against current cars sat in opc back lots (none of which meet my spec. choice and I have spent time looking though cars available with my dealer!), could you confirm you have managed to get the Oct/Nov part ex. incentive against an order car. I'm sure I got that impression from your post but anything else you feel you are able to reveal from your deal would be great.

Very similar spec. to my own ticks in the boxes so I'm sure you've made a good choice.

Thanks

Paul

Fair comment dyllan - seriously the car is incredible - I wish you luck convincing the Woman Incharge Financially Everyday (or wife as I call it)!!!

Definitely order as per my spec last Friday. Awaiting confirmation date but according to my opc they have a 'reserved' build slot this month. And yes, they want my current car asap.

Historically, I've found that as a regular customer over many years at the same opc that the initial quoted wait list shrinks if they know you are a genuine buyer with 'previous'. When a cancellation happens they'll elevate a regular buyer up the list. I suspect this is the case again. I may be wrong but just my personal experience.

It's all about choices, and the C2S v TT etc is utimately about personal preference and usage. I've always liked the narrow body 2 wheel drive from a purist design point of view, and for me, the performance is 'adequate' (I couldn't justify the extra cost of a new TT!). I also prefer to know that I'm the first owner, you never really know the true history of a car when buying from a dealer.

I hope you're happy with your initial decision and get the dealer to give you the right money for the Boxter now.

glad youre enjoying it-it does sound fantastic .hopefully wont be too long[;)]

Congratulations Peter, you will not be dissappointed. Looking forward to seeing the pictures.

I picked up my Gen II car on Friday and proceeded to put 500 miles on it over the weekend... marked improvement over the Gen I car in my humble opinion.

This is only the second 911 I have owed, but my brief findings:

1. Power delivery is a lot smoother
2. I prefer Sports mode on all the time
3. Love the new looks
4. Front end bobble is removed. A marked improvement on the Gen I car
5. PCM3.0 is a lot nicer than the previous versions and helped me on Sunday night avoiding a few area's of trafic trouble
6. Miss the PSE of the old car and have told my dealer to let me know when PSE is available for the Gen II cars as it will be getting booked in.
7. Steering wheel seems smaller as I cannot see the Oil temp or Oil Pressure guages as clearly as I could in the Gen I car.
8. I do miss not having the rain sensors on the wipers... but glad I had the rear wiper even though I think it spoils the look of the car.
9. Looking forward to booking into the Silverstone drivers day!

Pictures will be posted tonight.

Regards
Mark

Thanks Peter for your detailed answer,
I spoke to Norwich today and we came to the conclusion that you had timed your change just as the dealership was due to give the final spec on a dealer order Gen2, luck or good judgement?
My next porsche will be the 5th purchased from Michael at Norwich/Cambs so understand what you are saying about loyalty working both ways, I'm afraid this time I'm stretching the relationship as I seem to constantly be changing my requirements and giving Michael severe headaches.
On the car choice the 997TT may be slipping away so my thoughts are again back to a dealer stock Gen2 (slight compromise on the spec may be required on my part) this would mean without a prospective buyer the opc may now be loath to buy in the 997TT for the money already offered as they may have dipped another 2-3k , so it shows when a deal is being offered it doesn't pay to hang around. Why a turbo, well always felt I had the ultimate C2S GEN1 and always impressed by Gary W singing his Turbos praises and using his car all year round helped by four wheel drive no doubt but a new C2S PDK will be equally as nice.
Well next few weeks will reveal which direction I take so watch this space and enjoy your new Porsche.

Congratulations, nice choice, Peter, I like the 997S in Guards Red very much indeed.

Heated seats are brill - Judy has them in her Subaru. They wouldn't let me have them in my motor though!

Personally, I didn't spec. mats from the factory as I was expecting my dealer to provide these FOC (which he did). [;)]

Very much looking forward to seeing some piccies when it arrives.

Regards,

Clive
