Yesterday I went to a mid week trackday at our best circuit in N.S.W. Australia, Eastern Creek. Good track. I would post a link but I don't understand this site and how to post + cut and paste. Anyway the morning session was taken up with corporate invitation or passenger rides with Jim Richards in his ex-GT2 and Alex Davidson in a 4wd 996 t. Very educational. Both cars and drivers were different. The GT2 was more set up for the track being a winner of Targa Tasmania. The 996 t was mostly street with some basic mods + slicks. Did someone mention slicks? Woah!! I thought R-spec was unbelievable, but slicks are one or two steps up again. Anyway got a good look at their cars and driving. Some different lines into corners for sure. I tried them and seemed to improve my times. Got Jim to drive me around in my car which of course was a blast. You should Google him. He is an A.N.Z.A.C. icon. He bought an 87 turbo and converted it to Cup spec's. You could see that he was pretty tired and a bit obliging rather than enthusiastic, but when I 'Bags'd' him for a drive in my car he got a 2nd wind and asked all sorts of questions. He is bound by the rules of Targa, which as you probably all know is mostly stock. Nevertheless he had lots of positive things to say about my car (Nina). I told him to come back in 12 months and he'd really have something to write home about.
Part 2 of the story was that I heard a bit of a 'noise' after going out on the track post the abovementioned occurance. I pulled in and checked out under the hood. Revved the motor and heard a knock, knock, knock sound on overrun but not under load. I phoned my mechanic who thought it sounded like a small end bearing and if it only occured under overrun rather than load I may be able to drive it away. So I did and was humming along in the outside lane when,....phht phht phht popple......0000000...nothing...Oh this was on a freeway at peakhour. Lot's of fun trying to pull into the inside lane to park. Lot's of good feelings going on about now. Eventually got it towed to my mechanic about 35 miles away by a guy who could score a role in Texas Chain Massacre part 17. He had about 23 empty cans of Coke on the floor of his tow truck and had Country and Western music playing. Not that there's anything wrong with that but 'Deliverance' came to mind if you know what I mean???
Anyway not sure what's wrong yet, but it will be interesting to see the next sequence of events as I was going to be doing something to the car but not quite so soon.
Nothing like being parked on the side of an Expressway in peak hour traffic. Hmmmm...

Yikes []

It started out to be such a good story Patrick, but I don't like the ending. I hope it turns out better than your first diagnosis and you get back on track soon.

Sounds like you had a great time. Thanks for the update. Sorry to hear about the car trouble. Let us know what you find.

My mechanic is fine, however the Tow truck driver was something else:rolleyes: We haven't been in to look so not sure what it is but it doesn't auger well. I don't want to have to rebuild the bottom end in standard guise for next seasons racing only to have to spend more money for the upgrades in the same year. We shall see when we shall see...

horrible end to a great day - hope its minor - where you keeping an eye on the oil level?
Tony

Yes I did top it up once but possibly when I got caught up with Jim I should have checked again as it was a bit low when I pulled in once the noise started. Still above the bottom mark but we tend to run it a bit overfilled for racedays. I am preparing for the worst...
