Bl**dy space saver wheels

Just had an adventure with a naff space-saver and a naff compresser.
Never again! I'm now going to put the jack, towrope and tools in the spare wheel well and get a full-sized, fully-inflated spare in the boot.

Who else runs theirs with a full-size spare in the boot?

I've currently got one of the spacesavers that don't have the collapsable tyre. That never struck me a sbeing a good idea. The last think i'd want to be doing on a dark rainy night on the side of a busy A road is trying to inflate the collapsable spare wheel by the side of the road with half asleep eastern european truck drivers thundering by a few feet away from me. I think the space savers from the more modern models are the skinny type that you get in most cars these days and i've asked my local breakers to get one for me. I reckon these will be lighter than the standard one. OK they've only got a 50kmh speed limit so are a get you home solution, but the standard wheel weighs a ton, and I wouldn't like to be doing much more than 50kmh on it anyway.

A problem with the space-saver is that the tyre does not totally shapes back correctly on the rim when it is being deflated and it can cause difficulties to clip the boot carpet.

Ive always thought the space savers were awful and more a cheap replacement for the real thing not very practical in use so I replaced mine for the proper wheel.

On the forum under spares listing Mattpone is selling a spare wheel for £50...not sure if this is full size or not??[8|]

I'm looking to save weight as well and the modern space savers are pretty light as they have such a skinny tyre on them.

What size are your tyres?
Because I have 928 big blacks, I must have a 17 as a minimum size.

Not neccessarily.

If you have a front puncture then you must swap your large 17" wheel with 255 tyres on to the front and then fit your 16" space save to the rear. Then drive to the garage very slowly whilst everyone giggles at your odd looking car with 'Keystone Kop Karlos Fandango' wheels :ROFLMAO:

Sod that.

I've just removed one of the front 8x18 wheels inc fully-inflated 225/40-18 tyre. It fits (just about) in the boot. This means it can go on the back or the front. So I'm going to order another wheel/tyre next week when I have some dosh.

Yes, I know I will lose boot space. BUT, no messin around at 4am on a deserted road with a puncture.

Ah......peace of mind at last!

If you get the correct boot carpet to accomodate the bigger spare you dont loose that much boot space...you just have a bit bigger hump at the rear of the boot.
