Bl00dy unreliable cars!!!!

Last weekend we had the car all loaded up for a weekend in Manchester watching the Rugby World Cup and blow me the engine turned over repeatedly but just would not start. I didn't have any time for messing about so we had to transfer everything into SWMBO's Jazz.

Like all 944 owners I had a spare DME relay in the glovebox so on our return I popped that in and hey presto everything was fine again - Grrrrr! Trouble is I only bought that failed relay 15 years ago back in 2000 when the original one died - how rubbish is that for a £20 part. This one had better last me until 2025 or there will be trouble :ROFLMAO:
 
LOL I can't even remember where mine is....my spare DME, not my car. I think that is in the garage.
 
Mine's in the spare wheel well in the car - and thankfully in 16+ years of 968 ownership and about 4 years of 944 before that, the only relay I've ever had to change was the flasher relay! Touch wood rapidly!
 
When I bought mine the guy told me "there is a DME relay in the glove box" not knowing why, I just said "thanks" haven't needed it yet but found out a long time ago why its there [:)]

You have made a clever bypass that gets you out of a hole if your DME relay fails. You then have to buy a new one anyway? "Cheaper", in the sense that you still have to pay for a new relay, and the work making a Heath Robinson version to carry in the glovebox?? :rolleyes:

I must get another spare. I gave mine to a guy who was stuck at an event a couple of years ago, and he never got back to me to replace it. [:mad:]
 
Gladly, cheaper in that I don't have to buy one unless I need one, which may be never.

I'd say that the purchase of a new DME is an inevitability rather than a possibility, but you will save the interest on the cost of the £20 part if you don't buy it in advance!

At perhaps 4.3%/year, that's 86p/year. Over the 15 years lifespan posited by Smiffy, that does come to nearly £13.

Jus a small point. I think you will find that if you use a jump lead the petrol pump will still run after the car has stalled and could be dangerous in the event of an accident.
I would think that your insurers would not be impressed.
 
Jumping the relevant pins in the DME relay slot is only supposed to be an emergency "get you mobile" trick until you can source a replacement DME, because as Geoff says, the fuel pump keeps running so could be a fire risk. However, as an emergency trick, it's worth knowing which pins to jump!
 
I never said I would leave the jumper in, just I didn't need to buy another relay unless mine failed. And I'm from West London originally ;).
 
I replaced mine in 2005. The original had a part no which started 944 - I saw this and decided to get 2 new ones. Had no issues as yet....!
 
That'll work just as well. We all know that if something breaks, you never have a spare. The corollary of this is, of course, that if you have a spare then the original part will never break. So the fact that you have two spares, and keep them in the car, means that your original DME relay will last indefinitely. [:D]

Any of the suppliers in the FAQs, so long as it's the later type with the part number 993 615 227 01. Frazerpart list at just over £20 plus postage: you can pay less but do get a decent one as I've heard of problems with some new ones and would assume they were copies.
