Black Fuchs for 924S

DF2015

New member
Hello. Thinking of getting a 924S, so now for the important stuff... :)

I really like the black five spoke Fuchs wheels and have only seen them on 944s, where they look just great I think, so I wondered:

a) what size of these wheels goes best on the 924S and do people recommend?

b) where is the best place to buy them?

c) are there any pics out there of 924Ss with these wheels?

d) are there any other makes that look the same as the Fuchs?

Many thanks in advance from a Porsche novice,

David.

Hello. Thinking of getting a 924S, so now for the important stuff... :)

standard wheels are 6 inch all round, but the 924 looks really nice with 6 front and 7 or even 8 rears. You do need the 944 offset, and you can recognise real fuchs wheels by the fox head imprint, a serial number starting with 951 (7x16= 951.362.115.00 for example) and the size hammered into the wheel. Nonetheless, the offset is 23.3 and the backspace is 122.
b) where is the best place to buy them?
breakers, Ebay, porsche clubs ...

BUT! Trouble is that the 911 boys are buying them up like nothing else as the 951 wheel gives better clearance for the bigger brakes on a 911 and that makes that a set for a 944 is more in damand than a set for a 911 fuchs. Often, your set of 44 fuchs might be more expensive than the whole bloody 924S!

There are Fuchs replica's around, but they are cast alloy and not forged. Quality is sometimes and issue and nonetheless, they come with the 911 offset and not the 944 one.
I really like the 6 and 7 928S wheels on a 924S, similar as some late 924 turbo's.

Most suitable will be the rare and expensive 5.5" x 15" # 901.361.012.04: in equal second place will be the 6" x 15" and the 6" x 16", part # 901.361.012.06 & 911.362.113.00. The Fuchs wheel that most closely matches the 924S.'s offset is the 49mm (138mm backspace) 901.361.012.05 7" x 15" part off the 911R. These are unbelievably rare and expensive and if you can find one, it will be worth a good deal more than your car!

I agree with 944 man: last set of 7R, in a bad state, sold for £2000 a pair, a set of 5.5 x 15 are very popular with the vw boys so a pair is easily £600 and then you are talking about re anodising or polishing.
6 x 16 are positively common, so you should be able to snap up two pairs for about £400.

Ebay will be your friend!

Thats the most geeky post that I have ever made! [:D]

edited to add: Id probably go for 6" Design 90s, because theyre worth next to nothing. They'll fit perfectly and there are lots of pairs of them knocking about: probably after 944 owners have realised that they've been driving around on wheels one inch narrower than the earliest 944s were ever fitted with... (when Cup wheels came out many C2/C4 owners ditched their superior D90s for Cup copies and many of these wheels ended up on 944s (which should have a 7" & 8" fitments as opposed to the 911s 6" & 8").

Another option would be early 16" Boxster wheels. These 6" & 7" rims fit perfectly and they cost very little (I bought some a few months ago for a 924S and they cost £100 with reasonable matched Dunlops and crested centres!), if you like the style. You could also fit 944 MY87> ATS telephone dials for a stealthy improvement. They look the same as standard of course, but they're 1" wider; similar to the 924S Le Mans wheels, but without the garish turquoise trim (MY87> Turbo front 'phone dials would work too of course, but they all seem to have disappeared)...

One further point: if you do go for the Boxster wheels; then make sure that you get a proper set of 6" & 7" wheels, because the 7" rear wheels wont fit on the front of a 924S.

I tend to run 5.5x15 up front, and 6x16 in rear, genuine Fuchs. The massive advantage is weight. The fronts are around 5 Kg, the teledials and Boxter wheels are nearer to 8 kg. See attachment for reasonably detailed pic, my avatar shows the front...

I have a set of that very item on one of my 924Ts and in that application spacers are needed but then again the O.E. BBS wheels have spacers too. Gearing seemed about right.
