I need some new plates to my car and would really like to fit B&W Plates. How do they sit with the law?

Only legal on pre 73 cars but I know I lot of guys who run them on newer cars and keep the proper plates in the boot in case - "I was on the way back from a show officer and I must have forgetten to change them back"

Scratch that I'm thinking black and silver - but I think the same applies, if it's not pre 73 you need black and white front and black and yellow rear

Yup. Some people claim you get a slap on the wrists. A mate of mine had an M reg 1973 MkIII Cortina and I had an L reg MGB (both made after December 1972). I got warned once (It came with Black and Silver plates) to just take them off, and my mate got threated with a £1500 fine the next time his car was seen with them.

IMO, they look wrong on most things beyond the late 60s anyway. Most cars in the early 70s were on 'normal' plates anyway.

If you do want good Black and Silver plates, try Framptons at www.pl8s.co.uk. They even do the old style font (Old Charles Wright), which is the wider font that used to grace number plates around 12 years ago now. However they may not make you a set since it's now illegal to make show plates with VRMs on them in the UK (but you can import them from other countries) (If you are wondering why this happened, blame all the Euro look Plates people....)

Here is a pic of mine with black plates on, it attracted more police attention than i could ever want..... plus £30 a time

I was looking at normal front, stardard size but It doesn't seem worth it...

I guess it would just compound any other offence...

Whether they do you for having the wrong plates or not i just wouldn't want the police attention they'd create. It's situations like this where they start breaking out the micrometer depth gauges for your tyres and testing your lights to see if they can slap you with a few more VDF's while the pen's out. Been there.

I've had no trouble from the boys in blue with my black plates even when they have been following me. I do carry the correct plates together with my camera to give it the old "I've just been to a photo shoot officer" Just in case I do get pulled. I must say I hated them on my car when I first bought it but they really grew on me.
