Black window trims

Hi all

Having recently purchased my 87 Carrera Coupe in Gaurds Red, I have decided rather than trying to match all the miss-matched painted panels I'm going to paint he whole car properly.

My question is, all the black trim around the windows looks as if they may have been painted and the door handles are actually anodised, what should the finish be, painted or anodised?

Secondly, the rear parcel shelf has had some Carlos Vandango speakers fitted to it and as a result it needs a new shelf, would the car have come with rear speakers in 87?

I await your comments

Cheers

Harry,
I went through exactly the same procedure about 3 years ago for the very same reason on an 86 Guards Red coupe!!!
Firstly, the window surrounds are painted satin black as is most of the window furnature, and yes, the handles are anodised. Funnily enough, I'm looking at sorting my handles over winter as they're looking a little less than new and let down the rest of the car. I have seen them painted on a red targa owned by one of the lads in our region, I must say they looked really good. I don't know if I go to the expense of re-anodising based on that. However, paint is never going to last as well or as long.

As for rear speakers, they were fitted to UK spec cars as standard. The OE ones fit under the shelf and have descrete flush fitting covers. It sounds like your shelf might have been butchered to fit aftermarket ones, if so the only route might be to find a second hand one. Do you have rear seat belts fitted to your car aswell? If so, you might well be able to sell you existing shelf as fitting hte belt apatures to a non belt shelf is quite a pain....ask me how I know!!

I expect getting the windows and possibly the door handles powder coated would look original.
Anyone any experience with taking the window surrounds out?

Brian, if you pop the glass out the seal inserts can be removed once the glass is out of the seal....if you catch my drift. As with the front screen trim, its very delicate though and easily bent.
The secondry trim that's at the base of the window is held in by a couple of screws I believe.

Cheers,

True - Paint is on the surface & anodising is at the crystaline level.

All is explained here

FYI...Anodising is process not an end product per-se. To colour something during the process, (i.e. Black) you will need a pigment / paint.
