Blown up Boxter

Hello - wondered if any of you could help. My friend has an 03 Boxter S with 21K on the clock and FPSH. He bought it from a specialist a year ago and is the 2nd owner. Last week the car started to make very strange noises. He took it to the local Porsche dealer who charged him £480 to strip it down and diagnose that the engine has blown up! They have told him that to fit a new engine will be 9K. Needless to say he is not impressed.

Just wondered if anybody has had any similar experiences and what the outcome was. He has been told by the OPC that there maybe a possibility that Porsche will pay for it.

Any idea what was wrong? "Blown up" may be a technical term used by Porsche in this case but it's a bit vuague...

There are a small number of cars that have had one or two common failures. Given the milage, and assuming no untoward treatment showing up on the computer readout (over-revs due to premature down shifts for instance) then it would seem reasonable for Porsche to be making a contribution towards, if not the full, repair cost.

I don't suppose that he has the Porsche extended warranty does he?

Mark has summed it up.

Assuming it wasn't caused by being 'buzzed' (over-revved on a missed gear), then it should be covered under the Extended Warranty.

If the Warranty has not been extended [&:], then he will be looking at a 'sympathetic' warranty claim. This is a little bit more complicated and depends on a number of issues (ie was it UK OPC supplied and serviced? Is he a long term Porsche customer? Has the car been modified from standard?, etc). Depending on the circumstances they may pay all, or part, or none of the repair costs.

Keep us informed.

Beyond a warranty claim for a new new engine from Porsche there are other cheaper options - Autofarm can rebuild, albeit depends on what has gone awry, and ninemeister often have used engines (you'd need to know history of course).

If its an intermediate shaft failure i would think Autofarm could oblige with a rebuild.

This could be similar to the experience I had last Spring with my 03 Boxster - certainly similar mileage and FPSH. See the thread below for details and I hope your friend receives equally good service:

just a little update - Porsche have agreed to pay for the engine and 3/4 of the fitting costs, so it turned out ok in the end,
